Dr. Jane Goodall died #OTD in 2025. She was a primatologist, anthropologist & conservationist regarded as the world’s foremost expert on wild chimpanzees. Her field research revolutionized our understanding of primates & redefined what it means to be human. janegoodall.org #WomenInSTEM
A feel-good photograph of world-renowned primatologist and anthropologist Dr. Jane Goodall (1934-2025), famous for her groundbreaking, decades-long study of wild chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park. In this intimate shot, Dr. Goodall is positioned on the right, her profile turned left toward a young chimpanzee resting its hand affectionately on her shoulder. Her gray hair is tied back in a signature low ponytail, and she wears a white button-up shirt with thin red and blue vertical stripes. Her eyes are closed, and her mouth is puckered as she mimics a vocalization, creating a profound, empathetic connection with the chimpanzee, who tilts its head back with its mouth wide open in a matching vocal expression. The background is a soft, blurred palette of green and tan nature tones, keeping the focus entirely on their interaction. The composition exudes a tender, joyful, and harmonious mood, highlighting the historical significance of her revolutionary approach to treating animals as individuals with minds, emotions, and distinct personalities.

Please say no to pesticides and herbicides. Cocktails of these chemicals in fields, gardens, parks, verges and community spaces are poisoning bees, birds, hedgehogs, butterflies, beetles, frogs, damselflies and more, while running off into rivers too. Let's give nature a chance!

A person rides a bike up a sunlit street in the evening; a pedestrian waits to cross outside of a classic pub frontage for ‘The Conan Doyle’ with a black facade and golden trim, with hanging plants outside. Roxie Laybourne pioneered (and essentially founded) the field of forensic ornithology--the science of identifying birds from feathers and their fragments or barbules. The “Feather Detective” saved lives by making aviation dramatically safer from bird strikes. Born #OTD in 1910. #WomenInSTEM
A close-up photograph of pioneering forensic ornithologist Roxie Laybourne (1910–2003) completely absorbed in her groundbreaking work at the Smithsonian Institution. She looks down with intense focus through large, gold-rimmed aviator-style eyeglasses. Her expression is serene yet deeply analytical, her mouth set in a thoughtful line. She wears a white laboratory coat over a patterned, collared shirt. In her hands, positioned prominently in the lower foreground, she holds up two specimens for comparison: a cluster of soft, white downy feathers in her right hand and a single, gray-and-black flight feather in her left. The tight composition and soft, dramatic lighting highlight the fine details of the feathers and the analytical focus of her gaze, emphasizing a lifetime dedicated to aviation safety and the science of feather identification.
