Some languages force you to mark how you know something, in the verb. Turkish -mış / -miş / -muş / -müş (vowel harmony) = reportedly, apparently, inferred. "gel-di" = came (witnessed). "gel-miş" = came, apparently. ~25% of world's languages grammaticalize this.

The Turkish evidential suffix. Turkish tacks a small suffix onto past-tense verbs to signal reportedly, apparently, or inferred. Called the evidential or indirective. English reaches for 'apparently' or 'I heard that'; Turkish bakes it into the verb. Vowel harmony 4 forms: -mış (muhsh) after ı, a; -miş (mish) after i, e; -muş (moosh) after u, o; -müş (mewsh) after ü, ö. Example: gel-di came (witnessed) vs gel-miş came, apparently. Doubles as inferential perfect: waking up, seeing wet ground, saying yağmur yağmış means it rained, I infer from the wet ground.

Turkish isn't alone. Evidentiality is grammaticalized in about 25% of the world's languages. Three examples across three continents. Turkish: -mış suffix on the verb, gelmiş reportedly came. Quechua: sentence-final particles, -mi direct or witnessed vs -si reportative vs -chá conjectural. Bulgarian: full renarrative mood, dedicated verb conjugation for events the speaker didn't witness. English can express any of this, but you have to add words like apparently or supposedly. These languages make you commit.

A grammar that asks how you know. An evidential-marking language forces the speaker to commit to their source of information every time they open their mouth. Reported by someone else? Directly witnessed? Inferred from a clue? The verb gives it away before the noun does. The take: Some grammars ask you to say what happened. Others ask you to say how you know it happened.
