As I've said, the language/framing of commercial LLM techbros is the same as that of colonial occupation & of rape culture: "accept this is happening (against ur will bc we don't give a fuck about consent), accept bad things (happening to you not us), & be grateful for the supposed positives."

He ate them raw. Even the thought of it makes me retch. If anyone has plans to torture me, this would be it. Winston has his rats, for me it's raw margarine pastry topped with thin pink jelly. Absolutely revolting.

My brother prefers margarine, which I find obscene. He would sneak raw margarine from the tub. In Sunday school, they once made "jam tarts", with pastry made from margarine and strawberry jelly instead of jam. The oven had broken in the chapel kitchen, so my brother brought home his raw tarts.

I have strong opinions about butter on toast. The toast should be hot, but you don't spread the butter over it like you're raking a grass lawn; you gently break the surface of the toast so the butter can soak into the hot bread layer beneath. This way the butter doesn't run everywhere.

There is also a marked increase in dense, AI-written papers. AI tools are making it easy for authors to flood arXiv [and others with] low-value papers.
A histogram showing the incredible increase in submissions.

This September, arXiv received 40,363 submissions, which in turn generated almost 9,000 support tickets for arXiv staff and moderators. In only the past two years, submissions have doubled.

Graham Linehan is calling the people who murdered a trans man in cold blood, heroes.
Screenshot of an X post by Graham Linehan (@Glinner) commenting, "It looks like these two are heroes who may have saved some kids".
Linehan quotes a post by Andy Ngo (@MrAndyNgo) that reads: "Damn. According to a witness of the shooting homicide of the trans New York Times executive in Dublin, Calif., the elderly Chinese grandparents calmly walked away after the exec was dropped to the ground".
Below the text are two police mugshot photos side by side: on the left is an elderly Asian woman with short, wavy gray hair wearing a white shirt, and on the right is an elderly Asian man with short dark hair, slight facial stubble, and a white shirt.

Microsoft is claiming that AI will solve the problem of its increasing carbon emissions by somehow coming up with new technologies that don't exist yet. It cannot know that AI will fix the climate emergency but it does know that AI itself is skyrocketing its carbon emissions, erasing any progress.

Sleepy Bean @beanother.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
You are Microsoft and your promise to pay me back is Microsoft's carbon-negative-by-2030 pledge. The get-rich-quick scam is AI. Microsoft is claiming that even though its carbon emissions have increased, it's confident it will still reach its carbon negative target.

Sleepy Bean @beanother.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Oh, and it turns out you've actually stolen more money from me to pay for this crazy scam. I am completely fucked. I'm never seeing my £50 again and there's no chance of getting back the additional money you stole. Surely I should have nothing more to do with you?

Sleepy Bean @beanother.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
It's also banking on something that doesn't exist yet. There's no prototype. There's no study. It's something that has not been invented and maybe never will. You are Jack and you've just sold my cow for magic beans that do not work because magic isn't real.

Sleepy Bean @beanother.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I'm a bit concerned so I ask you how you're gonna make this money. "I found this amazing get-rich-quick scheme!" I groan. When you explain the scheme to me, it turns out it's not just unethical, it's not just exploitative, it's not just harmful to you, me, and everyone we know.

Sleepy Bean @beanother.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I check back in with you on day 3. You tell me "So...I actually haven't saved any money. Instead I've spent more money. But don't worry, I think I'm now on track to make enough money to pay you back on time, maybe even pay you back tenfold. I'm fully committed to paying you back on time."
100
Sleepy Bean @beanother.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Imagine I lent you £50 and said I needed it back in a week's time, and you said, "sure! I'm gonna save a little money each day and put aside enough to pay you back. In fact, if I manage to save a bit more than £50, you can have that too for your trouble." So I say, "great! I really appreciate it".

Some languages force you to mark how you know something, in the verb. Turkish -mış / -miş / -muş / -müş (vowel harmony) = reportedly, apparently, inferred. "gel-di" = came (witnessed). "gel-miş" = came, apparently. ~25% of world's languages grammaticalize this.
Large ember-red '-mış' suffix wordmark on beige background. Subtitle EVIDENTIALITY. Text: Some languages force you to mark how you know, right in the verb. Slide 1 of 4.The Turkish evidential suffix. Turkish tacks a small suffix onto past-tense verbs to signal reportedly, apparently, or inferred. Called the evidential or indirective. English reaches for 'apparently' or 'I heard that'; Turkish bakes it into the verb. Vowel harmony 4 forms: -mış (muhsh) after ı, a; -miş (mish) after i, e; -muş (moosh) after u, o; -müş (mewsh) after ü, ö. Example: gel-di came (witnessed) vs gel-miş came, apparently. Doubles as inferential perfect: waking up, seeing wet ground, saying yağmur yağmış means it rained, I infer from the wet ground.Turkish isn't alone. Evidentiality is grammaticalized in about 25% of the world's languages. Three examples across three continents. Turkish: -mış suffix on the verb, gelmiş reportedly came. Quechua: sentence-final particles, -mi direct or witnessed vs -si reportative vs -chá conjectural. Bulgarian: full renarrative mood, dedicated verb conjugation for events the speaker didn't witness. English can express any of this, but you have to add words like apparently or supposedly. These languages make you commit.A grammar that asks how you know. An evidential-marking language forces the speaker to commit to their source of information every time they open their mouth. Reported by someone else? Directly witnessed? Inferred from a clue? The verb gives it away before the noun does. The take: Some grammars ask you to say what happened. Others ask you to say how you know it happened.

My uni has partnered with Microsoft to roll out an institutional Copilot license to all staff & students. MS' carbon negative by 2030 pledge was cited as a selling point. I've been pointing out to anyone who will listen that MS has been dropping hints that they know won't meet this because of AI.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.
