Christa Pike’s attorneys have just released an update on her condition. Full release here:
UPDATE ON CHRISTA PIKE’S CONDITION

Statement from Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason from the TN Office of the Post Conviction Defender, and Stephen Ferrell and Luke Ihnen from Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee, attorneys for Christa Pike

The turnaround in Christa Pike’s health in the last three days has been profound and a credit to the medical team caring for her. She woke up from unconsciousness Tuesday morning (Oct. 6) and began taking limited steps Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 7). Today, she is walking with some assistance, and her arms—which sustained significant injuries during the execution attempt—are healing and regaining movement and strength. Her lungs are clear, and she has started to eat a regular diet. Physicians are encouraged by her physical recovery.

While her physical recovery has been remarkable, significant questions remain about the long-term effects of what she endured. Christa is dealing with the profound psychological trauma of having survived a failed execution, including the terror, pain and uncertainty of believing she was about to die. We cannot yet know the full emotional and psychological toll of that experience or how long it will take her to begin to heal. Even as she struggles to process what has happened, she continues to express concern for others, particularly the family of her victim Colleen Slemmer.

Christa also continues to experience cognitive challenges with concentration and memory. Her physicians have cautioned that it may take months to fully understand whether she sustained lasting cognitive injuries.

Christa committed her crime at just 18 years old after a childhood marked by rape, sexual violence, physical abuse and neglect. Later into her incarceration, Christa was finally properly diagnosed and treated for bipolar disorder and PTSD caused by her upbringing.

Christa has endured more than enough. We continue to call on Gov. Lee to commute her death sentence to life in prison without the possibility of parole. She should never be subjected to another execution attempt.

the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

CPD has exceeded its annual overtime budget for the 10th straight year, despite repeated promises from Mayor Brandon Johnson to reign in police overtime spending, according to a database published by Chicago's inspector general.

If someone breaks laws and you choose not to hold them accountable, you have effectively rescinded said laws. That applies to constitutions as well. This is an immutable, non-negotiable fact. Any analysis of what Democrats should do once they regain power that does not acknowledge this is worthless

Mendoza’s campaign has hired a chief of content who co-founded a local creator hub called Renowned, while Giannoulias’ campaign is currently advertising a $6,500-a-month new media manager role for someone with “a phone full of Chicago creators” at their fingertips.

“This is the first municipal election cycle in Chicago where we’re seeing content creators be relied upon so heavily to communicate with voters,” said Joanna Klonsky, a local media strategist.

Why is reducing ideological bias a goal? To what end? Politics is almost always a fight over values, not facts. I don’t care if I am “biased” towards social justice, whatever that means.

If being "ahead" is more socially and financially valuable than being "right" you don't ever need to understand tech (or any business) deeper than ~~vibes~~ and you can make all kinds of outlandish and foolish claims without concern. You just need an exit plan and not to speak of it.

The problem with this entire “talking across difference” approach to politics is that it assumes a shared consensus about democracy that no longer exists b/w the 2 main 🇺🇸 political parties. You don’t need to have lunch with people who don’t believe in free elections, equal rights, & the rule of law.

Democrats caved and/or facilitated this monopolization of practically every major media property in the US into the hands of a MAGA fascist psychopath. If the US had an opposition party, each of its presidential contenders would would vow to dissolve this monopoly by any means necessary.

O...
In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

Yeah, their schools are going to lose funding because Carlos Rivas has no interest in raising revenue for CPS. He's more interested in cutting school services in the name of "responsible budgeting". That's called being bought and paid for by Michael Sacks.

Yeah, I want an actual progressive on the board and you want someone who gives good soundbites. You want a candidate who works within the confines of a completely inadequate budget and lacks either boldness or desire to push for the funding that CPS needs.

The $150M unfunded piece of the 2027 budget is $50/resident in Chicago. We are starving schools of resources because we don't want to put a modicum of pressure on Pritzker and the state gov to step the fuck up. Last time I was in a CPS high school on the SS, I saw a rat literally scurry away.
