🔥 Emissions from Spain and Portugal #wildfires so far this year account for three quarters of 2025 total fire emissions for the European Union + United Kingdom based on #CopernicusAtmosphere data. As of 25 August, EU+UK emissions are the highest annual total in the GFAS dataset going back to 2003.

The EUBURN-SILEX campaign has just ended after a dozen flights over 🇫🇷 fires and 🇨🇦 plumes transported over the 🇫🇷 country. A comprehensive database was acquired using a set of innovative ✈️ in-situ and remote sensing instruments. Next phase is the postprocessing of the database acquired. 🔥 #EUBURN

New paper out - Regional wildfire smoke reduces boreal forest carbon uptake iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1... Wildfires are a source of carbon and they can reduce the carbon sink from the forest. Cumulative Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE) shows a big drop in 2011 Day 138 due to wildfire smoke.

It's official. 2025 is now the third worst wildfire year on record in Canada. A study from 2018 examining fire-regime changes in Canada over the prior 57 years showed the fire season had been starting approximately one week earlier and ending one week later. Probably longer now.

🧪🛰️🔥🌍 It is that time of the year when satellite monitoring of fires and #smoke in S. America has to be more dedicated. Fires have been going already for a while (since May particularly in N. Argentina and Paraguay and increasing north with time) but none have been v. intense or putting much smoke.

Manitoba is having a bad fire season in 2025 with over 300 fires burning over 1.25 M ha thus far. www.gov.mb.ca/conservation... Looks like there may be a rash of new lightning-caused fire starts with lots of lightning today and duff fuel moisture is very receptive to lightning starts.

The area burned in the Canadian 2025 fire season has hit 5 million ha. Third active fire season in a row that combined has burned 7% of the Canadian forest. Currently we have 346 fires out of control (192 monitored out of control (OC) and 154 OC that are being actioned) so expect the number to rise.

2025 is an active fire season in Canada with 4.2 M ha burned, 401 active fires and more importantly 166 of those 401 fires are out of control. Lightning season is kicking into gear in Canada so expect more fires and more fire growth with hot, dry and windy conditions coming in the next few weeks.
