🔥 New paper out in Science Advances We detect a clear externally forced signal in the global increase of extreme fire weather days since 1980. Using reanalyses and CMIP6 simulations, the fingerprint of change emerges above natural variability. 📄 doi.org/10.1126/scia...

Extreme fire weather days are increasing worldwide. Since 1979, days with FWI > p95 have risen globally, closely tracking global warming. More heat → more fire-conducive conditions.

Human exposure to wildfires in Catalonia has increased markedly over the past 30 years—driven not by more burned area, but by urban expansion into fire-prone landscapes. Figure below shows the trend clearly. DOI: doi.org/10.1038/s415...

Map of the Burned area in August 2025 across the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula (NW-IP; orange), highlighting megafires (> 10,000 ha; red).Scatterplot of monthly Buned Aarea versus Fire Weather Iindex in the NW Iberian Peninsula for 1985–2025. Plot of the burn selectivity in August 2025 for the NW-IP: black dots show the fraction of BA for each vegetation class. “Pinus” and “Quercus” include natural, semi-natural, naturalized and plantations of native species. The red triangles indicate the presence of each class in the study area (i.e., what fraction of that vegetation class would have burned if fires were equally affecting all vegetation classes). Black error bars are 95% confidence intervals estimated through a conservative leave-one-fire-out jackknife.

🔥📊 2024: A Record Year for Extreme Fire Weather 📊🔥 2024 has set a new record since 1979, with 9 more days of extreme Fire Weather Index (FWI) conditions than any previous year in the ERA5 dataset. #ClimateChange #Wildfires #FireWeather #FWI #ClimateCrisis #ERA5 #ExtremeEvents
The bars represent FWI anomalies (days above the 95th percentile) from ERA5 data, colored by temperature anomalies.

2024 stands out as the year with the highest number of extreme FWI days since 1979.

The data suggest a strong link between rising temperatures and an increasing frequency of extreme fire weather conditions.

The FWI is a meteorological index that indicates how favorable conditions are for fire spread and intensity, driven by temperature, humidity, wind, and precipitation.
