Our planet is heating faster than at any time in the geological record. That's terrifying. But here's the hopeful part: most of us are worried and want action — we just stay silent, assuming no one else cares. 7 in 10 people rarely or never talk about it. So the silence feeds itself

Pretty much every women’s public loo in, say, a train station, motorway service station, museum etc says something to the effect of “both male & female attendants are employed at these facilities”. Yet trans women aren’t allowed to use them Britain has become an extremely stupid place #transphobia

GOOD NEWS! Researchers have discovered a new antibiotic, known as manikomycin, that may be a bulwark in the fight against drug-resistant superbugs. By attacking the ribosome in a never-before-seen way, manikomycin can evade the existing mechanisms pathogens have developed to resist antibiotics.

Did you know Bank/Monument Station has 16 entrances? It’s one of the most confusing stations on the London Underground, & with good reason I set out to find every single entrance and see just how far this Underground maze really goes. I counted 16 but I think there may be more?

The Times - which has v much joined in the rightwing clamour to reduce immigration - now reporting that Mahmood’s “success” has cost the economy £4- to £7Bn. Would they like to now honestly confirm that fewer people = less spending power for all. There’s a high price to pay for this nasty obsession.
Patrick Maguire
Chief Political Commentator Oliver Wright Policy Editor

Falling migration numbers could cost the chancellor as much as £7bn in fiscal headroom as he writes his first budget, The Times has been told.
Government insiders believe that John Healey, who already faced an uphill battle to balance the books next month, is likely to have an even bigger challenge after immigration undershot projections from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).
The Institute for Fiscal Studies think tank estimated last month that the success of Shabana
Mahmood's
reforms, which have cut net migration to the low hundreds of thousands, could cost Healey some £4bn.

America had wiped out measles. Now babies are infected at birth.
Congenital measles has rarely been seen in the U.S. That’s changing as vaccination declines and more pregnant women become infected.

British mathematician & physicist Phyllis Nicolson co-developed the Crank–Nicolson method, a foundational algorithm in numerical analysis. Her contributions during/after WWII laid the groundwork for modern computational science, fluid dynamics & heat transfer modeling. Born #OTD 1917. #WomenInSTEM
A black-and-white portrait of British mathematician and physicist Phyllis Nicolson (born Phyllis Lockett, 1917–1968). The head-and-shoulders shot is against a clean, plain, and bright studio background with no visible objects. Nicolson is posed facing forward with a subtle, pleasant smile and bright, intelligent eyes. She wears her dark, wavy hair styled in a mid-century chin-length cut with volume around the ears and curls framing her face. Her attire is a simple, light-colored collared shirt. The overall mood is dignified, optimistic, and intellectual. The composition utilizes soft lighting that minimizes harsh shadows, highlighting her features cleanly. This image holds historical significance, capturing a pioneering woman in STEM whose wartime and postwar contributions co-developing the Crank–Nicolson method laid foundational work for modern computational science.

Also stopping the triple lock would harm women more than men, as their pensions are lower given they are far more like to have taken work breaks/work part-time to care for children (particularly disabled children) or elderly parents. It’s yet more systemic misogyny.
