For me as for so many others, Chris Wickham has been fundamental for how I think about the early medieval world--I'd even go so far as to say how I think about history writ large. An enormous loss.

Chess is hard for humans, but not for computers.
One day, it will be fully solved like checkers.
Between now and then, or even after, have fun.
People enjoy many games/sports where machines are vastly betterThere are more possible chess games, by about 40 orders of magnitude, than atoms in the observable universe. To solve chess, you'd have to map them all. Good luck.

Wrong, all legal chess positions are ~40 oom less than the estimated atoms in the Universe. And ASI will figure out ways to solve and compress that are far beyond what we could possibly comprehend.

one of the harsher opening paragraphs I've seen in a while (and it continues in largely the same way for 2400 words)

i had no idea, and this is really deplorable of nolan (from the excellent @emilyrcwilson.bsky.social review in LRB)
The most troubling ethical problem with Nolan’s Odyssey concerns the decision to film part of the movie in the occupied territory of Western Sahara, thus normalising the ongoing violence against the indigenous Sahrawi people. It is particularly galling that Nolan used this land simply as a visually striking backdrop for a film that centres, aggrandises and redeems the hero of a territorial war on account of his belated and partial acknowledgment of his own guilt.

Furious that Chris Nolan would disregard historical accuracy in adapting The Odyssey by making a "movie" with "cameras" instead of memorizing the entire story and then going on a nationwide tour to sing it to us while tripping on ergotized barley

Nolan has adapted the stories The Odyssey is based on more than he’s adopted the text itself. There’s a smoothing out of the text‘s complication that inevitably unwinds it a little. It’s also a puzzle box movie where whats in the box is Trauma, but the Trauma of learning where you are in history.

I think it's also down to flaws in implementation. VAR can only "recommend" a review to the on-pitch referee based on something they've seen, but what referee is going to reject that without (e.g.) going to the monitor - and that then creates an expectation of a decision being changed

Yes, it's a foul and so per the rules it's no goal and a free kick back in the Egyptian half - fine. But did the referee make a "clear and obvious error" for VAR to intervene? What was "clear and obvious" about it?
