Chess is hard for humans, but not for computers.
One day, it will be fully solved like checkers.
Between now and then, or even after, have fun.
People enjoy many games/sports where machines are vastly betterThere are more possible chess games, by about 40 orders of magnitude, than atoms in the observable universe. To solve chess, you'd have to map them all. Good luck.

Wrong, all legal chess positions are ~40 oom less than the estimated atoms in the Universe. And ASI will figure out ways to solve and compress that are far beyond what we could possibly comprehend.

The media’s defenders say the editorial / oped side of a newspaper is completely separate from the reporting side, so you shouldn’t blame the news side for bad takes on the editorial side. But when it comes to the @nytimes.com / @nytopinion.nytimes.com coverage of higher ed, there is no separation.

i had no idea, and this is really deplorable of nolan (from the excellent @emilyrcwilson.bsky.social review in LRB)
The most troubling ethical problem with Nolan’s Odyssey concerns the decision to film part of the movie in the occupied territory of Western Sahara, thus normalising the ongoing violence against the indigenous Sahrawi people. It is particularly galling that Nolan used this land simply as a visually striking backdrop for a film that centres, aggrandises and redeems the hero of a territorial war on account of his belated and partial acknowledgment of his own guilt.

Furious that Chris Nolan would disregard historical accuracy in adapting The Odyssey by making a "movie" with "cameras" instead of memorizing the entire story and then going on a nationwide tour to sing it to us while tripping on ergotized barley

Nolan has adapted the stories The Odyssey is based on more than he’s adopted the text itself. There’s a smoothing out of the text‘s complication that inevitably unwinds it a little. It’s also a puzzle box movie where whats in the box is Trauma, but the Trauma of learning where you are in history.

Yes, it's a foul and so per the rules it's no goal and a free kick back in the Egyptian half - fine. But did the referee make a "clear and obvious error" for VAR to intervene? What was "clear and obvious" about it?

The Sasanians in Context: Art, History, and Archaeology
Between the third and seventh centuries CE, the Sasanian Empire became one of the most dominant powers in the ancient world—extending geographically from West to Central Asia—and was the last major power in the region before the Arab conquest in the seventh century. In November 2022, in Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Asian Art convened “The Sasanians in Context: Art, History, and Archaeology,” a symposium of scholars discussing the latest research on the Sasanian Empire and its rich material culture—from impressive rock reliefs to elaborately designed metal vessels and finely carved seals—and exploring the empire’s legacy beyond its core regions. The symposium underscored how the field has evolved and revealed new areas for future research.Contributors: Antonietta Catanzariti, Anca Dan, Touraj Daryaee, Shervin Farridnejad, Mariachiara Gasparini, Frantz Grenet, Prudence O. A lot of media coverage of the ‘AI’ reading of the Herculaneum scrolls really fails to understand what’s happened here. There’s no language processing happening, the AI/ML is not trained on a corpus of texts or language. It can detect ink to see shapes. HUMAN EXPERTS are then transcribing the text.
A screenshot from here: https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2025-02-07-inside-herculaneum-scroll-seen-first-time-almost-2000-years

It explains that the machine learning involves only the detection of ink
