I accidentally and luckily came across four pieces of art in Englewood this morning.
"A Knight's Tale" by Bianca Pastel. Colorful mural on a brick wall of a Black girl wearing green boots, blue pants, a pink, purple, and orange tutu, and a yellow shirt. On her head is knight's armor with an open visor, revealing her very determined face with a bandaid on one cheek."Old heads," by Kenya Moffett-Garner. A flower planter in the form of a large sculptured head of a Black person, painted brown and sitting on a concrete cube-shaped pedestal."Inequity For Sale" by Tonika Lewis Johnson. A round yellow sign with a black border and post is printed with the words "Inequity for Sale." Part of the text on the sign reads "THIS HOME was sold on a Land Sale Contract (LSC), a legally binding contract disguised as a traditional mortgage that enforced excessive monthly payments to the speculator without an actual transfer of ownership to the homebuyer, leaving Black families at risk for [eviction, massive debt, other predatory loans...]. More information is available at https://inequityforsale.com/"Innovation Blue," by Amanda Williams & Tonika Lewis Johnson.
Williams recreated George Washington Carver’s 1927 patent to produce Innovation Blue, a prussian blue paint symbolizing ingenuity and joy. Johnson’s UnBlocked Englewood focuses on the 6500 block of S Aberdeen, exploring how reinvestment can repair the legacy of racist housing policies. In a full-circle moment, Innovation Blue covered a resident’s home façade, celebrating the legacy and possibilities born from UnBlocked Englewood." (From the Chicago Architecture Biennial)

This is a head-scratcher. 2445 W. Lexington, Chicago. The ownership history includes famed preservationist William Lavicka. yochicago.com/master-archi...
Two-story residence that I'm having trouble describing. It may be a new facade on an old building but could be a completely newish building. Anyway, the facade is smooth tan stucco with rough stone quoins at the corners. The windows are tall and very narrow with rough stone lintels and sill. The door is in the center with a Juliet balcony above it, accessed through another door with glass block sidelights. There is an arch above the second floor door made of one layer of stone and one of glass block. The parapet is rough stone alternating with square glass blocks, finials on each corner and a pediment of stacked stone and glass block.

"The works of the roots of the vines, of the trees, must be destroyed to keep up the price, and this is the saddest. bitterest thing of all. Carloads of oranges dumped on the ground. The people came for miles to take the fruit. but this could not be. How would thev buy oranges at twenty cents a dozen if they could drive out and pick them up? And men with hoses squirt kerosene on the oranges, and they are angry at the crime, angry at the people who have come to take the fruit. A million people hungry, needing the fruit- and kerosene sprayed over the golden mountains. And the smell of rot fills the country. Burn coffee for fuel in the ships. Burn corn to keep warm, it makes a hot fire. Dump potatoes in the rivers and place guards along the banks to keep the hungry people fron fishing them out. Slaughter the pigs and bury them, and let the putrescence drip down into the earth.
There is a crime here that goes bevond denunciation. There is a sorrow here that weeping cannot symbolize. There is a failure here that topples all our success. The ertile earth, the straight tree rows, the sturdv trunks, and the ripe fruit. And childrer dying of pellagra must die because a profit cannot be taken from an orange. And coroners must fill in the certificate- died of malnutrition- because the food must rot must be forced to rot. The people come with nets to fish for potatoes in the river, and he guards hold them back; they come in rattling cars to get the dumped oranges, bu the kerosene is sprayed. And they stand still and watch the potatoes float bv, listen to the screaming pigs being killed in a ditch and covered with quick-lime, watch the mountains of oranges slop down to a putrefying ooze; and in the eyes of the people here is the failure; and in the eyes of the hungry there is a growing wrath. In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage."

In 1965 our grandfather Toros, a printer, with fellow survivors Boghos (a painter) and Vartan (a zincographer), created this trilingual stamp in Aleppo to commemorate the #ArmenianGenocide. Notre oncle porta ce feuillet avec lui lorsqu’il émigra au Canada… #24avril #LestWeForget
A postcard of a photo of an offset print (20.5 x 19 cm), Aleppo 1965, framed in white, sits on the orange cover of the book « The Dawn of Everything ». An off-white sheet of of 12 stamps in pale blue, each with a small red cross on the left, a laurel wreath with the number 50 in white in the centre, and an image of hands holding a memorial flame in white on the right. The first row of 4 stamps has Arabic text. The 2nd has English text. The 3rd has French text. The text reads: The 50th Anniversary of a genocide of two million Armenian victims. »

I think about Armenian Genocide a lot. I think about these children a lot. How many massacres, how many wars have these children grown up with? This photograph was taken in Aleppo. These children were literally 'collected from the desert'.
Kids clad in simple clothing, most with short hair, standing or sitting as a group, with an adult man sitting on a chair on the side wearing uniform. Photograph is black and white and well aged. It depicts Armenian orphans rescued from the desert during the Armenian Genocide.

Today marks the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. 1.5 million of us were lost, including my grandparents' grandparents. It's a weird day for me—I mourn, I feel the weight, yet I rejoice, and try to live a little harder. We dance atop the unburied dead as they clap along in eternal time.
