Harvest Moon over Lake Ontario #TOPhoto #Toronto #LakeOntario
A full moon over the lake at sunset. There are rays in the sky and a cloud bank on the horizon. A spit of land juts into the water on the left with trees on it.

Empire Bluff, part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes complex, is a 400-foot-tall perched dune. Unlike a "true" dune, it's actually a terminal moraine with just a few feet of sand piled on top.

I don't think we acknowledge nearly often enough how much American cities have changed for the better over the last 40 to 50 years. The defining images of cities well through the 80s and into the 90s were crime, vice, and decay. Pop culture was chock-full of depictions of cities as cesspools.

Lake Ontario Facts @lakeontariofacts.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Lake Ontario may be the smallest of the Great Lakes, but it contains more water than Lake Erie! The Rochester Basin is the deepest point of the lake and contributes to the lion’s share of its volume. And isn’t it what’s on the INSIDE that REALLY counts?
English: Original image but rotated. Original caption: One of the Expedition 36 crew members aboard the International Space Station recorded this vertical image of Lake Ontario on Aug. 24, 2013. Lake Simcoe in Southern Ontario, Canada, is easily recognizable by its odd shape in the upper left, just below the southeastern tip of Georgian Bay.

Lawrence W. Ladd (ca. 1880)
"Chicago in Flames" watercolor and pencil on paper

----- [artist biography] -----

Lawrence W. Ladd (1865-1895), an artist born in Utica, New York, stands as a compelling figure within the late 19th-century American art scene. Often categorized as a “Utica Master,” his work transcends simple regionalism, offering a potent blend of Western themes, dynamic movement, and a surprisingly nuanced understanding of human psychology. Ladd’s career, though tragically short, produced a body of paintings that continue to resonate with their raw energy and evocative storytelling – particularly in his depictions of equestrian subjects and scenes of American life.

Ladd's early life remains somewhat shrouded in mystery, but it’s understood he received limited formal artistic training. He began his career as a mechanic before dedicating himself fully to painting around 1880. His style evolved rapidly, initially influenced by the Tonalist movement—a trend emphasizing atmospheric effects and subdued colors—but quickly developed into something far more assertive. He was deeply impacted by the American West, not just in terms of landscape but also through its people – cowboys, Native Americans, and frontiersmen – all rendered with a remarkable sense of immediacy and action.

[...]

Ladd's technique was characterized by a bold use of color and an expressive brushstroke. He favored bright, saturated hues—particularly reds, yellows, and blues—to create a sense of drama and vitality. His compositions were often asymmetrical, further contributing to the feeling of movement and dynamism. While his style is distinctly American, it’s also evident that Ladd was influenced by European artists such as Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, whose depictions of Victorian interiors and classical antiquity demonstrated a mastery of light and color. However, Ladd adapted these influences to create a uniquely American vision.

The last full moon rising over Lake Superior and under the Grand Marais lighthouse.
The full moon rises between the legs of a funky little lighthouse on Lake Superior. People are aimlessly walking around near the lighthouse, and the lighthouse's light is on. It's during the blue hour, so everything looks blue.
