Took a (very) rainy walk through the Loop tonight. I was absolutely soaked, but my camera stayed dry enough.
The pavement in Chicago is wet from a day-long rain. Street and traffic lights reflect on the stored in vivid colors. In the foreground, a person with an umbrella is an out-of-focus silhouetteCalder's Flaming - an orange, abstract metal sculpture in Chicago stands in a wet, reflective plaza. The sculpture is reflected in the rain coating the plaza's stone pavers in the evening with buildings in the background

Back in my home country for a while. From The October Country by Ray Bradbury, 1955.
OCTOBER COUNTRY
... that country where it is always turning late in the year. That country where the hills are fog and the rivers are mist; where noons go quickly, dusks and twilights linger, and midnights stay. That country composed in the main of cellars, sub-cellars, coal-bins, closets, attics, and pantries faced away from the sun.
That country whose people are autumn people, thinking only autumn thoughts. Whose people passing at night on the empty walks sound like rain…

So apparently this is happening because Europe now forbids the export of the lethal injection drugs and the US manufacturers forbid their use in executions, so US prisons are using frankenstein drug cocktails that may or may not work, violating the 8th Amendment. And SCOTUS is fine with that.

One of my favorite things is when the sky turns an austere grey and the trees turn mustard yellow at the same time in the fall. Another of my favorite things is the splashing of tires and honking of horns on city streets in the rain. Blessed with both today.

Tbh I have no idea what everyone on this site has been talking about for the past few days. I don't know what sport a Hawkeye is. I don't know who Eric Schmidt is. I don't know what happened at Cornell. This is an observation not a solicitation for info. I prefer to remain ignorant of these things.

Bluesky has got to be the quietest social network I've ever used. I don't get much engagement here, but I always find something interesting, often intellectually engaging, and occasionally something soulful. Unlearning my social media expectations might be the whole ball game.

This is notable because an internal protocol implemented in July 2025 specifies that only supervisors should speak to agents, and the dispatch recordings do not include the low-spoken officer (if it were Sorisho) asking for guidance. It's unclear whether the protocol is still enforced. 17/
All,
As of January 13, 2025, the Evanston City Council approved Ordinance 17-O-25, which updates the City9s
Welcoming City Ordinance. This amendment strengthens protections for immigrant communities and brings our local
policies in line with recent changes in state law and best practices. This is a reminder for current personnel and an
update for new personnel.
The Evanston Police Department will not participate in any federal civil immigration enforcement. Officers and staff
are strictly prohibited from asking anyone about their immigration or citizenship status during any interaction. EPD
will not cooperate with or assist federal immigration agencies, including ICE or any other entity involved in
immigration enforcement.
The department is also prohibited from sharing data or accessing departmental databases for federal immigration
enforcement purposes unless explicitly required by law. We will not enter into any 287(g) agreements, which allow
local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration laws. This continues our long-standing department policy and
follows state law.
Effective immediately, any requests or contact involving immigration enforcement and/or officials must be directed to
the highest-ranking supervisor on duty. Line-level officers must not respond to, engage with, or share information in
these cases. Officers must notify a supervisor right away for direction.
The Evanston Police Department will continue to support immigrant victims of crime, including by providing
assistance with U and T visa certifications as part of our victim services work. The City will also increase access to
immigration-related resources through 311 and other platforms.
These updates reflect our legal obligations and the values of our community. They reinforce Evanston9s commitment
to being a welcoming city for all people.

This photo, of an officer speaking with an agent at that intersection, was taken by a source who told me that he was the first officer they saw at the intersection. That's line-level EPD officer Oliver Sorisho on the right. (And here's Sorisho being sworn earlier this year.) 15/

The man is only weakly heard in the background by five minutes into the audio file, even as the resident holds him in his arms. By 9:55:59 a.m., eight minutes after the call was transferred to Evanston 911, the man is reported unconscious. (The 911 call ends by then.) 10/

The agent responds in a stern tone as the man begs him to stop. "Stop fu— Stop resisting! Stop resisting!" It sounds like he is put in handcuffs: "Give me your other arm. Give me your other arm!" Then, a minute and 38 seconds in, the man tells the agent, "I'm a fucking U.S. citizen!" 4/

I seem to have fixed it by creating an account all over again from scratch with the same info and payment, which is a bit scammy because the next monthly charge wasn't due yet. I basically gave them an $11 bribe to get my account back. All for my beloved Rohmer...

My contribution to today's discourse is that I haven't heard most contemporary music because I am old, but not because I'm stuck in a rut. I'm still actively discovering music made before I was born or before I came of age.

Knitters inventing an armhole-less turtleneck slanket is the best news I have heard in like 6 years.
A woman, sitting in front of a fireplace, is adorned in The Garment, a full-length knit blanket with a turtleneck opening in the center to put your head through. The vibe is "dachshund who got up from a nap but the blanket is still draped over them as they walk through the house."
