Can we stop cutting down huge old trees every year? As storms are getting stronger and more frequent, Chicago is losing its mature tree canopy at an alarming rate. Just get a really baller fake tree and put this tradition to bed.

Search Is On For Chicago's Official Christmas Tree

Get festivals out of parks. Rinse and repeat every single year: 1. Festival destroys park 2. City has to fix the park 3. Park never improves and citizens can't use the park for a month or more every summer.

A huge shoutout to our students spending the entire class outdoors in the steady rain & muddy conditions, carefully cutting down buckthorn & planting native perennial species plugs from IL’s largest native plant nursery today 🪏🌱 Climate action & conservation work is healing 🌎✨

Signed copies of THE LANGUAGE OF TREES (Special Edition) now available at Exile in Bookville. If you’re in Chicago, lucky you! What a great bookstore. I signed until my pen ran dry 🌿 #IndieBookstore #NatureWriting #Chicago #LongCovid #BookTour #Trees
Photo of me with Javier Ramirez in his bookstore, Exile in Bookville in Chicago. We’re surrounded by shelves of books, floor to ceiling. Lots of handwritten book recommendations stick out from the shelves below favorite books. I’m wearing a black face mask and white t shirt. Javier’s wearing a black Sonic Youth tshirt with Kim Gordon rocking in stripes. We’re both holding copies of the new special edition of my book, The Language of Trees: How Trees Made Our World, Change Our Minds, and Rewild Our Lives by Katie Holten. Selfie! Katie Holten and Javier Ramirez smiling with a signed copy of Katie’s book The Language of Trees, special edition with gold embossed forest on the cover. Katie wears black face mask.Photo of katie holten signing books at Exile in Bookville in Chicago. A long table piled with display of The Language of Trees.Screen grab from a video, showing piles of books on a table. Gold forest of trees and roots flows on the cover. A red rope behind, adds a sense of luxury and special occasion.

At the hospital for my treatment today. I always try to make the folks who attend to me laugh. Nurse (asking the usual questions): “Do you use nicotine, alcohol, or recreational drugs?” Me: “It’s not 1987, so we’re good.” Mission accomplished. 😁 (Chicago skyline still breathtaking from here)
View through a window of the Chicago skyline far off in the distance. There is a large grey building to the left, and a smaller brick building in the lower right foreground. There are trees surrounding the brick building.

requested a street sign here via CHI311 app and glad to see it was installed — this is the only and final block of Randolph Street west of Ogden Avenue, an unusual layout that’s existed since the area was platted, due to Lake Street’s angle

My OG crow friend, Swoops, came to visit me to collect his peanuts during my walk back from my morning run . I can tell it is him because he is the only crow I know that will fit three unshelled peanuts in his beak. We've been friends now for at least 8 years. I hadn't seen him in a while...
