I think I've just lost all patience for people pretending a complicated thing is simple, even more so when it's clear that such a framing is beneficial to them.

Yes, I know it's more complicated than that. That's sort of my point.

Man, it's really wild to read that cartoonists union statement that opens with "we're disappointed SPX chose not to kill itself."

Wildest thing about human bodies is that reliving the physical symptoms of anxiety by, say, using the heating pad I got for my bad back, also helps the mental symptoms.

I guess it’s not fair to say the neighbor was creepy so much as he gave me the creeps. Not his fault aging and death are unnerving to a 5 year old. I don’t think my dad knew him, aside from living in the same building for a little while. And this is why I don’t write narrative fiction. The end.

Normal Human Despair @bairfanx.neocities.org · 13/08/2026
On the way there, we’d head out the back door of the building. Before going down the rickety ass stairs, he’d knock on a creepy old neighbor’s door to see if he wanted anything from The Back Porch. I remember nothing about the man, save that he was white and looked like death to my young eyes.

I explicitly remember buying the Archie TMNT comics there when my dad took me on a Saturday morning so he could get a copy of the Chicago Tribune and a pack of Marlboros. It was maybe a quarter mile walk from an apartment that he eventually stopped paying rent on, doing work for the owner instead.

Normal Human Despair @bairfanx.neocities.org · 13/08/2026
But all I remember them having is newspapers, magazines, cheap candy, cigarettes, and a Ms Pac Man machine in the back. And comics on a spinner rack. That’s the whole point of me posting some shit out, right? The comics? It feels anachronistic to be a millennial who bought newsstand comics.

Normal Human Despair @bairfanx.neocities.org · 13/08/2026
The first time I ever remember buying a comic (or having one bought for me, I suppose) was at The Back Porch, which was quite possibly the only newsstand left in Bloomington-Normal in 1990. I always thought of newsstands like the one in Watchmen, like kiosks. This was more of a convenience store.

Bluesky should go back to invites, continue aggressive bot bans, create a Craigslist-style marketplace (since you’re more likely to buy/get services from a educated or good person on here than any other social network), and market this place like a walled garden protected from enshittification.

Incredible. When E—n M—k & his crew obliterated USAID in a weekend, they deleted a vast trove of publicly-funded knowledge: the Development Experience Clearinghouse. A Canadian high school student (!) happened to have downloaded the entire thing for a project. AidData has now posted it for all.

I loved Miasma but immediately knew there were people who would be disappointed by it. Like what you’re gonna like, but idk how you get into that theater not having some idea what you’re in for. To choose that and vomit a thousand words of disdain is just fucking wild to me.

Normal Human Despair @bairfanx.neocities.org · 12/08/2026
Found myself on Letterboxd for some reason, noticed a really bitter half star review of Camp Miasma and fell down a rabbit hole of skimming the bad reviews, most of which were young men who have substacks, still use twitter and likely will never have any awareness that they’re film bro caricatures.

To be fair, I would guess that every language is bad at this. I just have the most experience with English, and from what I've learned about Spanish, Japanese, and Latin, other languages tend to be more structured and less awful.

My favorite part of my MFA was excitedly telling people that I was studying poetry because I hate English and that it's an awful language and that poetry is the only way I know of to even come close to taking the electricity in my brain and replicating it in someone else's.

The kinds of people who do this are also the kinds who think that because they can type they can write, and man do I wish we had better distinctions in English between "connect letters and words" and "create art with language," cause calling both of those things "writing" is fucked.

It is astonishing how many people think "running a business" and "running a website" are skills every writer has or wants to have, that doing so doesn't take massive amounts of time away from the actual meaningful work of writing. And that's to say nothing of the skills needed for fundraising.

I just went to look up what the Harry Potter Alliance renamed themselves, because I couldn't remember and figured their impact has likely dimmed since then based on the lost name recognition alone. Found out that Fandom Forward shut down 2 years ago.

The reason Harry Potter Adults are so bad is because for a long time there were totally normal Harry Potter Adults who did things like use their fandom to raise money for charity but then Joanne went absolute horses and all the normal adults ditched the fandom so the only ones left are total ghouls.

Like, my friend group had one copy of the tapes a handful of us would watch. One person bought a bootleg of the soundtrack from Mitsuwa back when they had a bootleg anime store. That people are discovering it now 25+ years later is nuts to me.

I can't overstate how important it feels for The Children to be discovering Lain. I'm sure there's a lot of Millennial and Gen X folks who are fueling this, too, but it's one of those cyberpunk shows that feels so very relevant and I barely knew anyone who was into it when it came out.
