Need for speed? Driving above the speed limit costs you — and doesn't actually save much time

It feels ridiculous to be told my entire life the importance of reducing my energy usage and switching to stuff like LED bulbs and then read reports of energy prices spiking in many US communities due to data centers.

Our conscious time is something we can never get back once it is taken. It is the most precious resource of every human life. More emphasis should be put on how much of this time is congealed into useless tasks, waiting, watching advertisement, making things that break easily and are thrown away !

When I said we should get rid of speed cameras and just put shit in the way such that the speed limit doesn't need to be surveilled because it is simply unachievable, a lot of people who claimed that it was about privacy and not about wanting to speed became very angry with me.

New laws would require 3D printers to employ blueprint scanning “print blocker” software that, in theory, would detect gun files and stop the print before it starts. The problem is, nobody has specified what the blocking technology must actually look like. www.theverge.com/tech/960802/...
quote: “It’s already illegal to have a homemade unlicensed gun, and this technology [3D printing] isn’t efficient for manufacturing firearms. But it’s a good way to sell it to the public. The actual mechanism for control is vague and remains undetermined.”

EV batteries didn’t just get cheaper — they got bigger at the same time. ~80% cost reduction, ~3× increase in size, while median EV range jumped from 100 km to 500 km. With EVs now at cost parity, that’s how cost curves reshape entire industries. #Bettrification #EV #BEV #PHEV

Monster Ultra Wild Passion (Passion Fruit): It tastes alright, but it tastes more like the general monster flavor than any flavoring in particular. It's a bit sour, and also a tiny bit saltier than I'd like. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to get it again but it's not bad.

Happy (?) Ides of March to all those who celebrate. It was on this date in 44 BCE that several members of the Roman senate objected to Julius Caesar having declared himself Dictator perpetuo (‘Dictator in perpetuity’) in the strongest possible terms (*stab, stab*). 🔪 🏺 1/ #IdesofMarch 📸 me
The so-called 'Green Caesar' portrait. There are no surviving portrait statues of Julius Caesar created during his lifetime (100-44 BC), although coins bearing his likeness provide reliable evidence for his appearance. All extant sculptures are posthumous, dating from the time of the Julio-Claudian emperors who honored him as the founder of the dynasty. This extraordinary. over-life-size example is carved from graywacke, a hard sandstone that was quarried at Wadi Hammamat in the Eastern Desert of Egypt and was long used for Egyptian sculptures.

Romano-Egyptian, probably made in Alexandria, Egypt, ca. 30 BCE - 25 CE. Graywacke.

Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Antikensammlung, SK 342The Ides of March denarius, issued by Marcus Junius Brutus, is one of the most famous and historic coins ever minted. It commemorates the assassination of Julius Caesar on March 15, 44 BCE, an event that later inspired many works of art, literature, opera, and film. Caesar had declared himself "perpetual dictator" at the beginning of that year, thereby directly prompting the assassination plot by Brutus and a group of other senators who feared for the survival of the Republic under his tyrannical rule. The reverse of the coin shown here not only bears the inscription naming the day of the murder but also depicts two daggers representing the weapons used to stab Caesar to death, as well as a cap usually worn by slaves who had earned their freedom, symbolizing here the liberation of Rome.

Inscription: BRVT IMP L PLAET CEST (Brutus, Imperator, Lucius Plaetorius Cestianus), head of Brutus, EID MAR (Ides of March), pileus (felt cap symbolizing liberty), and two pugio-style daggers, which were associated with the Roman military.

Rome, 43-42 BCE.

Reminder: most rodents have thumb nails rather than claws. In fact the ancestor of all rodents probably had nails. They probably evolved independently from our nails but for similar reasons: nails are good for dexterous food handling. 📸Missagia et al 2025

Liver's cheap because there's low demand for it. If everyone started eating it, it would become expensive. And even if everyone loved it, it's only recommended that you eat it once a week, or you risk vitamin A toxicity. Would be nice if the secretary of HEALTH knew that!
