Wonderful decision. I remember being a student in high school and the sheer prevalence of kids being distracted by their phones was ALWAYS getting in the way. Phones are literally designed to be as addictive as possible, it's good for the kids to have some limits.

Racing to work, to pick up your children from school, or go from one errand to the next not only wastes money and sends harmful emissions into the air, it barely saves you time, new research says.

Need for speed? Driving above the speed limit costs you — and doesn't actually save much time

I read the article, it's good. I don't get what the desired way to move forward is though. Is the idea to simply not have the DSA endorse AOC, while also hoping she realistically Does get elected, while also building up the movement on more principled grounds?

Schools teach socialization and structured learning of knowledge, as well as practice of things that you physically need to do yourself to practice (and can't just read about). Fix public schools.

It feels ridiculous to be told my entire life the importance of reducing my energy usage and switching to stuff like LED bulbs and then read reports of energy prices spiking in many US communities due to data centers.

I read an article linked in one of the replies. It sounds like it's nothing more than compressed gas? You can already pressurize air, but I don't think the energy storage density on that is very good. Am I missing anything that would make this more effective?

Our conscious time is something we can never get back once it is taken. It is the most precious resource of every human life. More emphasis should be put on how much of this time is congealed into useless tasks, waiting, watching advertisement, making things that break easily and are thrown away !

When I said we should get rid of speed cameras and just put shit in the way such that the speed limit doesn't need to be surveilled because it is simply unachievable, a lot of people who claimed that it was about privacy and not about wanting to speed became very angry with me.

New laws would require 3D printers to employ blueprint scanning “print blocker” software that, in theory, would detect gun files and stop the print before it starts. The problem is, nobody has specified what the blocking technology must actually look like. www.theverge.com/tech/960802/...
quote: “It’s already illegal to have a homemade unlicensed gun, and this technology [3D printing] isn’t efficient for manufacturing firearms. But it’s a good way to sell it to the public. The actual mechanism for control is vague and remains undetermined.”

Yeah. I think taxpayers including myself should pay for breakfast and lunch for school kids, and not the kids which can't/don't pay taxes (because they're kids).

I think a ~5 minutes timer is reasonable. Maybe slightly longer, 10-15 minutes. I don't see much benefit from only allowing one edit in that time though. I feel like the short time limit covers the downsides adequately.

Not sure what you're on about unfortunately. I mean I agree with your other comment in one of your replies that the rich should be taxed more, that's also important. But if min wage went up the whole wage distribution would also increase, since many people would have better options to switch jobs.

Ayden Bridges @aydbridges.bsky.social · 28/04/2026
Your own wage would go up bc your current job's wage is going to be competing with jobs paying the higher min wage. Price of goods would not be significantly affected.

I've read a little on the grid issues and genuinely never thought to just not feed power back into the grid. Maybe there's more to it but I suppose that would work as a bandaid until the grid is improved. Like it feels wasteful but it's also kinda not.

I mean sure, if there aren't nuke plants, they can't meltdown, + won't create spent material to begin with. But I'm just saying that means the issue is with the nuke plants, not the spent material itself. Managing nuke plants properly is critical. Europe seems to be doing that fine as far as I know.
000
Ayden Bridges @aydbridges.bsky.social · 09/04/2026
Because the nuclear waste contaminating a really big area around the plants is because they blew up due to runaway reactions or whatever. A nuclear waste site can't really do that, and the area of one of those is much smaller and is well defined. You could stick it in the middle of nowhere.

Ayden Bridges @aydbridges.bsky.social · 09/04/2026
I don't think that's true because one thing is storing spent uranium and the other is mismanaged plants that blew up.

EV batteries didn’t just get cheaper — they got bigger at the same time. ~80% cost reduction, ~3× increase in size, while median EV range jumped from 100 km to 500 km. With EVs now at cost parity, that’s how cost curves reshape entire industries. #Bettrification #EV #BEV #PHEV

To be clear for readers: this is a tradeoff, because we have to choose between oil and batteries for storage. Batteries are almost fully recyclable, oil is permanently consumed on use (among being extremely toxic when burned). Nothing says we have to exploit other countries for raw lithium/etc!
020
Ayden Bridges @aydbridges.bsky.social · 21/03/2026
And it is a tradeoff. There are limited options to pick between (oil or batteries for energy storage), and you have to choose between these, with different costs and benefits. Oil extraction is fundamentally horrible for the people involved, and for end users, and is a permanently lost resource.

Ayden Bridges @aydbridges.bsky.social · 21/03/2026
Also absolutely NOTHING says we have to get our new metal with children working in mines (or most other awful conditions). That's on the people making the choices where to buy raw materials, who don't care.
100
Ayden Bridges @aydbridges.bsky.social · 21/03/2026
There's a bunch of lithium that already exists in batteries and can start being recycled. I don't think the people working in oil fields are doing that much better.

Ayden Bridges @aydbridges.bsky.social · 21/03/2026
It's all about tradeoffs. It's a damned shame that lithium etc mining is as harsh as it is though for sure. I'm really hoping for solid state batteries.
