And you can bet your ass they'll charge you a lot more and pay their content suppliers (and thus, artists) a lot less. All the more reason to buy physical again and get acquainted with how easy it is to rip discs and self-host.

This piece by @doctorow.pluralistic.net in @locusmag.bsky.social remains my favorite piece about today's politics surrounding the tech we're currently calling AI. I reread it last night (listened, actually via Doctorow's podcast) and his reading is a treat. locusmag.com/feature/comm...

Commentary: Cory Doctorow: Technopolitics
It’s one thing to be “anti-AI” in the sense of believing that AI-generated slop, disinformation and deepfakes are bad; that AI companies that hope to con your boss into firing you and replacing you…

Ali and I adored #residentevil! Cregger managed to not only make the most faithful to the IP film yet, but also kept it completely believable at the character level. The scares were all earned, but a proper number of jumpscares were invovled (it *IS* RE afterall). The ending? Unexpectedly delicious.

Color me a pessimist but I’ll be blown away if half this crowd shows up when the bulldozers do. Americans are as servile as ever and as performative to the limits of permission.

Shouldn't it be Batman Night? Anyway, happy Batman Day.
A city street at the pinkest part of dusk. A dude in the fanciest coat you've ever seen is hanging out with his boyfriend in leather pants. The sweet coat dude turns to see Batman strolling down the street, cape flapping fabulously in the breeze. The coat dude flirts, "Hiya, Batman. Nice night for a stroll." Batman ain't DTF, though, so he simply walks past, while greeting them with a, "Gentlemen."

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows a brain. The brain is saying "I'm 30 and YOUNG! I only recently fully developed!"
The second panel shows a heart. The heart says "I hear ya! I can keep going for DECADES more!"
The third panel shows a spine's face. It weakly says, "I am old".
We zoom out and the spine is using a walker. It continues, "so very old".

What’s up? Oh, just the new issue of Asimov’s with one of my poems in it. Check out “Decoherence” if you have a chance!
The latest issue of Asimov’s Science Fiction magazine, with a stellar nursery in red-orange nebulas. Authors on the cover include Octavia Cade, Michael Libling, and R. Garcia y Robertson, as well as headline stories “The Ghosts of Goldilocks” by Kevin J. Anderson and Rick Wilber, as well as “Quest for the Corpus Mundi” by Preston Glassman and Paul di Filippo.

I need to toss more RAM in the family media server (our personal netflix & cloud photo storage) because it is /struggling/ with only 8GB--which means, in this economy, I'm about to take the kids to thrift stores to look for older DDR4 machines. Hopefully me popping machines open doesn't irk staff. 🙃

Back on bluesky after a trip through FB and then Threads, ending in, you guessed it, deleting accounts again. I think here and Insta will be the places for me. I'd ditch insta, but it still has utility for me and isn't nearly as consuming / enraging as threads/fb. Text here. Pics there. Hello World!

I keep thinking “my god the people they’ve killed seem like exceptionally good folks” and I think the lesson there is that they’re not exceptional, but that wonderful people abound and that a baseline distrust in humanity is a shitty conservative trope that privileges power over collective strength

Graphic with a blue background and large white text reading “DEAR AMERICAN FRIENDS.” Below is a screenshot of a post explaining that Canada does not have CBS, that a “60 Minutes” episode aired normally in Canada, and stating that Canadian networks are not subject to U.S. government interference. The post ends with “We’re not under a dictatorship. You are.”

People who dismiss e-books or audiobooks as being somehow less worthy or less meaningful than physical books are missing the point of books. Books are not ink and paper, just as human beings are not defined by their physicality. Books are connections; emotions; ideas; just like their creators.
