This is so wild. He’s making claims of billions in revenue from this pipeline into 2060. I would LOVE to know where he’s getting these numbers from — bc the IEA’s last non-Trump-pressured forecast shows oil demand declining as of 2030. + If it’s as profitable as he claims, our climate is fucked.

Literally just learned this now at Bristol's MShed museum. This must be what the nursery rhyme Pop Goes the Weasel is about.
'We had 500 to 600 customers on a Monday... and it was always the women who came. They brought in their husbands' suits, shoes and wedding rings and on that they raised enough money to see them through the week.'

Jesse White, a worker at John Swaish's pawnbroker's shop in the 1900s

The pawnbroker

The number of pawnshops in Bristol has varied across time, responding to social need. A hundred years ago people could 'pop the weasel' (pawn their weasel and stoat/coat) in over 50 pawnshops. They got a cash loan on their belongings, and could buy them back (with interest) on payday. It was a form of credit open to all, and a vital service in times of unemployment and recession with no Social Security. By the 1960s most had closed down but the number is rising again.

Raselle's pawnbroker's shop, Stapleton Road, 2010

Bristol's oldest pawnbroker opened in Old Market in 1796, and was taken over by Amos Raselle in 1894.

El Niño climate patterns supercharged by burning of fossil fuels, study finds
‘Godzilla’ event currently brewing could push 50 million people into acute hunger before the end of next year A series of strong El Niño climatic patterns in recent decades, such as the “Godzilla” event currently brewing that is set to warp weather around the world, have been supercharged by the broader overheating of the planet caused by the burning of fossil fuels, a major new study has found. El Niño is a naturally occurring phenomenon, taking place every two to seven years, when the waters of the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean heat up, causing a cascade of impacts around the world. The latest developing El Niño, set to peak later this year, is set to be the strongest in living memory and has been informally dubbed a “Godzilla” event. Continue reading...
