Happy Stanislav Petrov Day. Today we celebrate the life of a man who saved billions by not believing a computer. May we all learn this valuable lesson.

I stepped away from my computer for a moment. When I returned, it was building something. I did not ask it to do this. We're not ready for what's coming

I went to the grocery store to buy some extra sharp cheddar the other day. The guy in front of me grabs sharp cheddar—and what can I do? One-up him in silence? Say something? What could I say without the implication that the man can't handle his cheddar?

the so-called "rough breathing marks" in Greek are calligraphic flourishes which northern/western europeans, unaccustomed to beauty as an end of itself, incorrectly assumed to have a phonetic purpose.

Sorting through my google docs, I found the sestina I wrote back in college. (the assignment was just for an epistolary poem)
Chance Conversation

You wake in a half-full bed each morning.
The lights turned off, the heat off too, the cold
sank into your smooth kitchen floor’s tiles; paper
laid at the table where your kids once spoke,
and ate pancakes, in the previous age,
and saw deer browsing by your patio.

Chairs still tied to the bookstore patio
fence, I worked opening shift that grey morning.
My brow knit, mood harsh, like wine with no age,
I cursed the chairs’ padlock’s odd place and cold
body; I think you heard coarse words I spoke—
Language I’d blush to record in paper.

I started, my heart fluttered like paper
you stepped into view of the patio
I needed to open the store! We spoke
among stretched shadows that sleepy morning.
You human-faced lighthouse! Standing in cold,
yet beaming through the distance of your age.

I’m glad you stay active in your old age—
though your skin changed from flesh into paper.
I saw you but once, and left you quite cold;
we’d planned next open shift’s patio
talk—I would give my feedback next morning
on the article scrap of which you spoke

I saw you looked gladdened by words we spoke—
I’m glad you can make new friends as you age.
You walked off, and I worked on, from morning
to evening; I wilted like wet paper.
The next day I was not at the patio—
my boss swapped shifts, consigned you to the cold

I am a fool, but my shoulder’s not cold,
With guilt I recollect the time we spoke.
Abandoned friend, I forgot the patio
This inconsistency ill-fits my age.
I wish we could speak of that paper—
I’d invite you inside, on that morning.

It’s senseless to be cold in isolated age,
you spoke to draw connections to me with paper, but
chance breaks what’s bound on the patio in the morning.

this is going to be an absolute mess and I’m pumped. it will have to have subtitles bc Middle English is largely unintelligible to us. but, even funnier, pronunciation at this time is a nightmare French was still a court language and so they’d have various dialectical French accents layered on top
Post from discussing film: Robert Eggers confirms that the dialogue in WERWULF is all 1300s Middle English. “We worked with 2 Oxford professors on the dialogue, which is in Middle English and then worked with a dialect coach on a way to temper pronunciation” source: esquire

english isn't for cowards. if you're not saying 'torpify,' that's a skill issue. there's no Académie Française telling you what to do. if you try to type 'pallific' and freak out when you see a little red underline, maybe you're not ready to roll with the big dogs.

St Cuthbert’s Church, Crayke, North #Yorkshire “St Cuthbert” window (2020) #HelenWhittaker The detail shows the Tale of the Affectionate Sea Otters who were reputed to have warmed & dried Cuthbert's feet after a night of him meditating & praying whilst standing in the sea. #StainedGlassSunday
The window drew inspiration from the book 'Cuthbert and the Animals 'by John Mc Manners & the Lindisfarne Gospels. So two otters link to “The Tale of the Affectionate Sea Otters” who were reputed to have warmed and dried Cuthbert's feet after a night of him meditating and praying whilst standing in the sea.
The Celtic knotwork border is influenced by designs in the Lindisfarne Gospels.
