Oh: I really can’t emphasize enough how useful it is to check — literally right now, do it. Likely, it’s peace of mind in a couple of minutes. At worst, you still have time (barely) to remedy it.

Reading Jude Doyle's new piece today reminded me of how chilling watching Velvet Goldmine for the first time in college was (in 2006). It felt like a warning. .... and now Pom Poko is also coming to mind. Damn.

drawing of a sword that’s basically just a green serpent, from start to finish. serpent’s neck is the sword’s handle, two coils (and two feet) of its body form the sword’s guard, and the rest of its long tail is the blade. its mouth is open, red, just like its eye.

New (well, updated) anniversary essay on what really happened in New York City and the, well, hijacking of what that day meant by the Bush Administration to justify its wars at home and abroad.... www.meditationsinanemergency.com/9-11-the-c/
The Bush Administration did not want a heroic public. They wanted a cowed, obedient public and they set about creating one, telling people to stay home, to fear their neighbors and report them for anything suspicious, to go shopping (stupid shopping bags with American flags and "America: Open for Business" were everywhere while other things, such as civil liberties were being closed down), to accept a loss of those liberties in the name of wartime patriotism (and we are still suffering from that sabotage of our rights), to demonize Muslims abroad and at home (a wave of stupid violence against Muslims, and people who looked Muslim to haters, and even Sikhs erupted in the wake of the propaganda war). The first enemy they had to conquer was us, and in the years that followed people lost their jobs in heartland America for speaking out against the wars.

The administration wanted us to pretend that it was the military that protects us when the military was effectively useless that day, to pretend that rather than the act of a small terrorist sect this was an act of war that justified invading Afghanistan and then Iraq, which conveniently had a lot of oil that the administration (headed by oilmen George W. Bush and Dick Cheney) redirected to their cronies, as Trump has with Venezuela's oil. The government was reorganized to create the Department of Homeland Security, and the Third-Reich tones of that word homeland was noted at the time, and to create ICE.

I made a stupid comic about my small dog who eats bugs (I love him)
A three-panel vertical comic titled “CICADA SEASON,” drawn in sketchy brown lines on a tan background.

First panel: a rat terrier roots around in a clump of grass, which seems to be making a “BZZT” noise. A speech bubble from a person out of view reads, “HEY! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?”

Second panel: the rat terrier pops his head up to look at the speaker. There’s something sticking out of the side of the mouth. It looks suspiciously like wings. Cicada wings?

Third panel: Cicada wings. They vibrate, making the whole dog vibrate, too, as the cicada goes “BZZZZZT”

If you're feeling in an Odyssey-ish mood, I do have a book that's half Alexander the Great, half Odysseus talking to a fortune teller at a university party. It's weird and tricksie and regularly criticised for refusing to explain itself at all.
4. The Chariot
Is this what you want? The blood death? The moment a man ceases, his tongue caught between his teeth?
I’m just reporting back.

Then take the fox to the henhouse, the lurcher to the hare. The dissolution of the spirit is the same, a black wind down to hell. Ten years has made masters of us. Eyes flickering to meet in the dark and nothing at all needs to be said. We simply are. The body automata.

Is that what we’re supposed to revere about our heroes?
The tragic and the animal?

If it’s making you sick then stop. All stories are wet clay, all of us are bodies snapping to attention at the sound of our names.
I don’t know how.

If the muse doesn’t come, then lie. If the muse arrives let her spirit ring you round. And speak.

You kill them. Sleeping men. Their king whom they loved.

(And then we stole the horses.)

Please call your reps today and tell them NO on HR 7661! This is a nationwide book ban in public schools that'd forbid any mention of transness. Congress wants to slam through some terrible legislation this week before they go on summer break. @authorsabb.bsky.social
Slide 1: a blue graphic with an outline of the United States. Red and white text reads: Call. National Book Banning Bill Proposed in US House of Reps. Tell your rep: Vote no on H.R. 7661.
Slide 2: a blue and red graphic with white text that reads: House Republicans have introduced a bill to effectively grant the federal government decision-making power over what books make it into the library. H.R. 7661 is a national-level book banning bill that would ban any book that, according to the bill's language, "(ii) involves gender dysphoria or transgenderism." This means any book about a trans person or the trans experience would be banned from every public school in the United States.
Slide 3: a blue graphic with red and white text that reads: Call your reps. Tell them they must oppose this bill at every turn. It is egregiously unconstitutional, targets ideas based on ideological disapproval, and misleads parents and the public about the content of children's books. It does nothing to protect kids and will badly harm education. It will tie school material funding into knots and hurt anyone who is a library materials vendor, regardless of content. If you are a bookseller, librarian, or author, tell them your livelihood depends on the next generation of readers.
