Oh man. Shirley Jackson of course. “The Lottery“ didn’t scare me that much - of course grownups do awful things - but “Castle” was my intro to casually evil children. And Zenna Henderson is as great as Jackson. I reread The Anything Box recently, wondering if it was as scary as I remembered. Yes.
Photo of 1960s cover of Shirley Jackson’s “We Have Always Lived In The Castle”
Girl leans on aged, rickety wood plank fence. Her long dark hair is blowing around erratically. She is peering through a hole in one of the planks. Her one visible eye has a knowing, amused expression.
The plank over her head pokes up like two devil horns. One of her hands is languidly holding a sprig of berries that looks ominously poisonous. Behind her the sky is deep blue with dark shadows that might be trees, vaguely suggesting a castle.Photo of 1960s cover of Zenna Henderson’s “The Anything Box”
Girl holds her hands in the shape of a rectangle. Colors flow up from the rectangle suggesting flame and smoke. The girl doesn’t have much expression, she is intent but looks like she’s done this before; no surprise or amusement or fear at whatever it is she’s conjuring.

Hah! I live in a mlíder climate near a pond so I get to hear geese year round. More in spring and fall of course but even midwinter I’ll hear them coming and going and always wonder: *what* are they chatting about? (Sometimes at dusk they’ll do donuts in formation around the pond. Evening stroll!)

In eldercare the system is not functioning for benefit of elders. Upper mgmt: really dumb people Min-wage staff: gritting teeth, doing their best Adult children of residents: refuse to acknowledge that paid-for care is not happening So, system is doing great for investors. Seems analogous to… a lot

I was just talking to a friend today about Dolly Parton's Imagination Library - new books every month, totally for free, for kids ages 1-5. My son was part of the program - this is a copy of the letter that came with his last book, right after his 5th birthday.

The 42nd Traditional Kaga Yuzen Crafts ExhibitionVisiting Dress “Plum Scent” exhibited by a member, Ichiro Kakimoto Artist’s Comment : I tried to express the strength of the intersecting branches and the old tree with moss that bends vigorously.
Exhibited at the 42nd Traditional Kaga Yūzen Crafts Exhibition, Plum Scent (Ume no Ka) by master craftsman Ichirō Kakimoto (柿本市郎) is a magnificent visiting dress (hōmongi) that perfectly exemplifies the painterly realism and refined technical mastery of Kanazawa’s Kaga Yūzen tradition. Fulfilling Kakimoto’s intention to capture the strength and vitality of an old tree, thick, lichen-dusted limbs twist forcefully upward across the back seams, branching out into a delicate lattice of dark, sharp twigs that reach the shoulders and upper sleeves to frame a dense canopy of pale plum blossoms (ume) at the neck. Unlike Kyoto's Kyō-yūzen, which frequently relies on metallic leafing and embroidery, this piece celebrates pure hand-painting with rice-paste resist (itoshinori). It features quintessential Kaga hallmarks, including kaga-goki (outside-in petal shading) and precise naturalistic details in the moss-draped bark and budding flowers. Set against a pale blush-white ground that gently deepens into a rich mauve-lavender at the hem (suso-boke), the composition achieves a grounded, sophisticated harmony between structural force and delicate botanical beauty.

I’m old enough to remember the Bicentennial. OK, old enough to be yelling “200 beers for 200 years!” but anyway. It’s so sad. 1976 America had its flaws, plenty of flaws, but now? It’s breaking my heart. I just hope to live long enough to see the decency and optimism we felt in, eg, ‘76, ‘92, ‘08.

My grandmother, b. 1902, was an old maid at 27. Her worried father gave her a duplex so she could support her unmarried self. She later did marry and her husband now owned the duplex. He immediately sold it. She spoke bitterly about that until her dying day. 65 yrs of rage that never faded. 1/2

Two strips from Hark! A Vagrant where Kate Beaton reimagines Spiderman as "Brown Recluse Spider Man"

In the first BRS sees a thief to stop, but is distracted by a crevice he can sit in.

In the second BRS (a regular-sized guy in a spider suit) bites a man and panics because he was just scared and the guy was "really big!"

I just don’t get authors who spent a year or a decade writing a book then consent to their audiobook narrated by a kid reading a book report or a wannabe actor orating Shakespeare on an unmiked stage. So frustrating. I want to listen to your book! Vet your narrators! bc most publishers sure don’t.
