I want to sit in that third photo and spend a few hours just listening to the creek and the birds and the wind rustling the grass.

Also, while trying to figure out how to describe these covers for the alt text, these both have *great* cover art. These are the covers I remember, quite vividly!, from my childhood.

Oh man. Shirley Jackson of course. “The Lottery“ didn’t scare me that much - of course grownups do awful things - but “Castle” was my intro to casually evil children. And Zenna Henderson is as great as Jackson. I reread The Anything Box recently, wondering if it was as scary as I remembered. Yes.
Photo of 1960s cover of Shirley Jackson’s “We Have Always Lived In The Castle”
Girl leans on aged, rickety wood plank fence. Her long dark hair is blowing around erratically. She is peering through a hole in one of the planks. Her one visible eye has a knowing, amused expression.
The plank over her head pokes up like two devil horns. One of her hands is languidly holding a sprig of berries that looks ominously poisonous. Behind her the sky is deep blue with dark shadows that might be trees, vaguely suggesting a castle.Photo of 1960s cover of Zenna Henderson’s “The Anything Box”
Girl holds her hands in the shape of a rectangle. Colors flow up from the rectangle suggesting flame and smoke. The girl doesn’t have much expression, she is intent but looks like she’s done this before; no surprise or amusement or fear at whatever it is she’s conjuring.

Hah! I live in a mlíder climate near a pond so I get to hear geese year round. More in spring and fall of course but even midwinter I’ll hear them coming and going and always wonder: *what* are they chatting about? (Sometimes at dusk they’ll do donuts in formation around the pond. Evening stroll!)

Oof. Long day for the dog, long day for you. I had a cat who ate two full pom-poms, metallic gold and red (go ‘Niners) but thankfully barfed them up before I could panic in my mind and my wallet.

San Andreas gets all the fame while the seriously scary Hayward fault bides its time. Every time I feel an earthquake (~2x/year out in the far East Bay) I think Oh jeez not the Hayward please.

I guess all those women working really hard for crap pay to make his life so smooth and comfortable are completely invisible to him. Not uncommon, of course, but why would The Atlantic give a platform to some boy who has never bothered to wonder why his laundry always comes back folded.

Good stuff, thank you. When I was a little kid we briefly lived in Phoenix, in a brand new house. There was a hogan across the street with an old guy who rarely came out. Soon the hogan got moved out via a huge flatbed and three more houses went up. I hope that elder got his peaceful life back.

Bears are just giant cats, which is a horror when you think about it. Alaska trapper friend took cabin door off hinges when he left for the summer so “the bears just trash the interior instead of splintering the whole cabin” Also I got to follow an Alaska geologist as he inspected…

I do have an interest in linguistics; the problem of translation is fascinating. Wilson analyzes different translations that illustrate just how difficult it is, the priority-setting and compromising. Not to mention a delightful analysis of the song “WAP” to open her essay on ancient Greek comedy.

I had to use it last year! Power was out 1 am-4pm on Easter, which fouled a lot of Easter dinners not to mention my morning coffee. I mixed it with instant chocolate which wasn’t a great idea: easier to hurriedly gulp down a few ounces of nasty coffee than 8 oz of nasty instant mocha.

In eldercare the system is not functioning for benefit of elders. Upper mgmt: really dumb people Min-wage staff: gritting teeth, doing their best Adult children of residents: refuse to acknowledge that paid-for care is not happening So, system is doing great for investors. Seems analogous to… a lot

I did not properly appreciate grass until 2020, when the Calif. suburban spring grass was unmolested by landscapers and fire mitigation crews. A rare chance to grow tall and go to seed. Here’s a spot where I spent a lot of pensive time during the shutdown looking at grass and listening to birds.

Not a parent, but as a city to suburb reluctant migrant I feel your culture clash. One thing that baffles me is the predictable: - A good idea - “Nobody do anything yet, we’re setting up a committee” - Committee can’t agree on process/leader, everybody’s angry, breaks up, good idea unimplemented.

Got me thinking about my teen slang, mid 70s. It was odd. We were too cool to use hippie slang and way too cool for disco. Even punk, which was cool, didn’t really give us slang. It’s like that narrow generation was trying too hard to avoid identification w anyone 5 years younger or older

I remember when seatbelts became mandatory in my state. Normal people said Oh this is a pain but makes sense I’ll get used to it. Anyone yelling about The Man/Muh Rights was recognized and dismissed as a whackjob. I thought about that time a lot in 2020. The whackjob window had shifted for sure.

Patterns! Reflections of buildings, lava flows, river drainages, saplings, winter frost, human capillaries… I wish you could go set your amazing photographer‘s eye on the Traps but sadly… If Russia ever regains its sanity it could woo tourists from the same cohort that visits eg Iceland, Antarctica.

I expanded it to get a close look at the cool patterns and was reminded of the Siberian Traps. I look at those a lot. I guess thinking about the end Permian mass extinction helps put my little problems in perspective :) Plus: beautiful geology persisting 250 million years is kinda cheery.

The 42nd Traditional Kaga Yuzen Crafts ExhibitionVisiting Dress “Plum Scent” exhibited by a member, Ichiro Kakimoto Artist’s Comment : I tried to express the strength of the intersecting branches and the old tree with moss that bends vigorously.
Exhibited at the 42nd Traditional Kaga Yūzen Crafts Exhibition, Plum Scent (Ume no Ka) by master craftsman Ichirō Kakimoto (柿本市郎) is a magnificent visiting dress (hōmongi) that perfectly exemplifies the painterly realism and refined technical mastery of Kanazawa’s Kaga Yūzen tradition. Fulfilling Kakimoto’s intention to capture the strength and vitality of an old tree, thick, lichen-dusted limbs twist forcefully upward across the back seams, branching out into a delicate lattice of dark, sharp twigs that reach the shoulders and upper sleeves to frame a dense canopy of pale plum blossoms (ume) at the neck. Unlike Kyoto's Kyō-yūzen, which frequently relies on metallic leafing and embroidery, this piece celebrates pure hand-painting with rice-paste resist (itoshinori). It features quintessential Kaga hallmarks, including kaga-goki (outside-in petal shading) and precise naturalistic details in the moss-draped bark and budding flowers. Set against a pale blush-white ground that gently deepens into a rich mauve-lavender at the hem (suso-boke), the composition achieves a grounded, sophisticated harmony between structural force and delicate botanical beauty.
