The "social contagion" thing drives me screaming angry.
When I was young I had no clue trans ppl existed. I'd never met anyone trans. I saw cruel caricatures in pop culture occasionally.
When I realized trans was a thing someone could be, it hit like a lightning bolt. My life felt newly possible.
