Felt existential angst this morning. I had apples and puff pastry. Made custard. It was supposed to cheer me up. I made something that looks like dread with cinnamon.
White enamel baking dish, lined with crumpled baking paper on which an open puff pastry concoction spills baked apple. There is not a lot of logic to it. The crust looks nice and crunchy though.

Today marks 26 years since Muhammad al-Durrah, then 12 years old, was captured on camera as he and his father, Jamal al-Durrah, were caught in the crossfire in the Gaza Strip during the Second Intifada. The incident saw Muhammad get killed by bullets that came from an Israeli post.

"You will never defeat us" is a very funny thing to say after you've just bailed everyone who was involved in whatever the fuck this was
All five men arrested in RAF base plot are British nationals
The five men who were arrested and subsequently released on bail are all British citizens, home secretary Shabana Mahmood has just told the Labour party conference.

She adds that the scene is “now safe” and the residents living near to the RAF base are now able to return home.

“Let this be a reminder: you will never defeat us,” he says.

Burnham, as expected, fuelling far-right narratives instead of addressing them He knows painting these as "legitimate concerns" will only embolden and legitimise them He knows they are minoritarian but he makes them "the people" He's comfortable for the rest of us can suffer the consequences
Burnham says concerns of women in Piddington about camp for asylum seekers 'understandable'

Q: What would you say to the women of Piddington concerned about having a camp for asylum seeker near their village, or women in other villages with similar concerns?

Burnham replied:

Those concerns are understandable and they have to be addressed in whatever solution is finally agreed.

There were also concerns expressed about the use of hotels and the reason why the nature of accommodation is changing across the country is because a commitment was given to end the use of hotels, and that was what many people were calling for a few years ago.
Burnham says he will be 'relentless' in dealing with small boats, but sidesteps offshore processing question

Q: Would you consider more radical policies, such as sending asylum seekers to a country like Albania to have their claims processed there?

Burnham avoided the question, but stressed there was some evidence that “things are going in the right direction.”

He said he would be “relentless” in addressing this issue.

And he praised what Shabama Mahmood, the home secretary, is doing on this.

She’s got a strong grip on this issue. What we have been doing is working, but more is needed and more will be done.

Andy Burnham says this whilst sitting on the most aggressive anti-protest laws of our lifetimes, which have been used to arrest and charge nuns for holding signs protesting a genocide.
It was because Manchester’s humble mill workers took a principled stand.

During the American civil war, despite the hardships it brought them, they refused to touch raw cotton that had been picked by slaves.

In 1862, people with little power used it to help those with none on the other side of the world.

The best change is change like that, bottom-up change led by people.

And whatever distorted view social media offers today, the world is still full of good and decent people who are ready stand up for what is right.

The imposing Callanish Stones stand talk with their shadows spanning out across the glass. It's a super clear sky, but looks cold. Above the central stone is a strange figure-of-8 shape of dots. This is the location of the Sun, at noon, on various different days across the year.

Pen, watercolor, black & white charcoal pencil.

Another featured piece from the Spooky Pants book.

A man in a sweater stands with his hands on his hips looking out of a large window with the curtains open. Things aren’t looking good outside, reader. A massive winged demon is emerging from the clouds as dozens of little ghosts and bone demons rip through the sky. On the ground below we see townsfolk running through the grass. Our man in the window is in no mood for this. He lets us know, “Oh, I am in no mood for this.” His dog looks out the window as well, wagging its tail.

Fantasia (1940) inspired drawing. I think I could’ve gone a little heavier with the chaos outside but we’ll try again with fresh drawings this October. I like how the clouds turned out. Trying to balance my sloppy lines with more detail can be tricky but I think we achieved a good result.

It’s good to see that mainstream UK papers are now, finally, after many years, covering esoteric hitlerist Nina Power and DC Miller’s connections to Ben Dilo. It is a shame, however, that this FT column does not go into detail about their egregious antisemitic and racist conspiracy thinking
A crypto billionaire who made a record-breaking £36mn donation to Nigel Farage's Reform UK financed a defamation case against an artist who claimed to have been the victim of an antisemitic harassment campaign.
Ben Delo loaned more than £300,000 to a former academic, Nina Power, which was secured against her home, to help her bring a joint libel suit against Luke Turner, a Jewish performance artist.
The case shines a spotlight on Delo's support for individuals and organisations whom critics accuse of having at times tested the boundaries of legitimate free speech.
Power and her fellow claimant lost their defamation case in 2023, and she was declared bankrupt. Afterwards, Delo enforced his rights over her London home as a way of recovering the money he had lent her.
That has meant that her other creditors cannot seek the sale of the home to recover other debts, unless Delo's security is deemed invalid in some way.
One of the creditors is Turner, the artist, who had originally sought the bankruptcy petition against her in order to reclaim his legal costs. The court had ordered Power and her co-claimant to pay him an initial £250,000, which they have not done.
Delo considers Power a friend, according to people close to him. The billionaire is in effect now the landlord of the bankrupt former academic, and receives monthly rent payments from her as a means of recovering the debt, according to people familiar with their financial arrangements. She remains the legal owner of the property.

What on earth is happening?
This had become the new normal. RNLI crew members had been forced to take their permits off their cars after their tyres have been repeatedly slashed. Most of them have been pilloried at the school gates or turned away from local pubs. One man who worked in search and rescue had been beaten unconscious and hospitalised, recognised for TV interviews he had done.

"demanded that the homes of the Film-makers' families be demolished" gee I wonder where they got that particular idea for collective punishment from
On Wednesday evening, dozens of rightwing activists gathered outside the home of the parents of Rachel Szor, one of the directors of NAZA. Among the organisers were activists and campaign staff linked to the far-right Otzma Yehudit party of Itamar Ben-Gvir, the national security minister. Messages circulated in activist groups earlier on Wednesday urged supporters to gather outside her house. Some of the messages included explicit calls for violence.

Police and border police officers were deployed at the scene.

One protester called for the “death penalty for traitors” and demanded that the homes of the film-makers’ families be demolished.
