Now that you've jeopardised the health of TV's most caring presenter, perhaps I could be permitted to reach by you for a Wagon Wheel.

On this day 1605 Guy Fawkes began his journey to London. It would take him several days because his legs were made of old tights stuffed with newspapers.

To honor all the newly appointed Ukraine experts who say Ukraine is doomed, I want to present you this legendary take. It was really a mainstream belief in 2022 that it is over for Ukraine. 5 years later, we still stand, take ground, destroy targets 2000km deep into Russia 😎

1,900 year-old Roman birthday invitation! 🎉 🥳 From Claudia Severa to her friend Sulpicia Lepidina, it’s one of the earliest known examples of writing in Latin by a woman! Found at Vindolanda fort, it gives a glimpse of social life on Rome’s northern frontier! 📷 me #RomanFortThursday #Archaeology
My photo shows a Roman wooden writing tablet (Vindolanda tablet no. 291) with a birthday invitation written in ink. The invitation is from Claudia Severa, wife of Aelius Brocchus, to Sulpicia Lepidina, wife of Flavius Cerealis, the commander at Vindolanda fort on the northern frontier of Britannia. The writing tablet is made up of two square, wafer thin, pieces of wood, displayed side by side. Each piece is now somewhat fragmentary, with pieces of wood missing in places. The wood is mid-brown in colour with dark text, and is displayed on a cream mount. The text is written in cursive Latin. Most of the text was written by a scribe, but Claudia adds in her own hand “I shall expect you, sister. Farewell, sister, my dearest soul, as I hope to prosper, and hail” making this one of the earliest known examples of writing in Latin by a woman. Dimensions: Width 22.3 cm × Height 9.6 cm. Dated c. 97 - 103 AD. From Vindolanda Fort, Northumberland. Now in the British Museum collections.

If, as @jim.londoncentric.media suggests today, TFL is losing revenue for the upkeep of London’s public transport due to the increase in hire bike use my modest proposal is ban the wretched things and melt them down for scrap

Just a reminder that there’s a chance to make art and explore London in Bloomsbury on Friday. The art making is free and the guided walk - by the always brilliant @minimumlabyrinth.bsky.social - is raising money for the Change For Good charity, which provides mentoring for men leaving prison

Not sure how it has taken me this long to realise the pleasing circularity that Canary Wharf is now the heart of the Isle of Dogs and is named after the Canary Islands, whose name derives from the Latin for Isles of Dogs.

Funniest thing the NT could do is have the restaurant as a walk-through exhibit and open a tea shop next door doing scones, cakes and jacket potatoes.

I say this a lot but the Four Seasons Conference remains one of the funniest things that has ever happened in human history. Some of us have been gaslit into being told it was "cringe" or "resist lib" and it wasn't. It just hands down a fantastic, roaringly hilarious thing from start to finish.
