Ok, Old Hollywood film sleuths, this photo is one that I’ve unable to identify. A clue, I believe, is that it may be from an RKO film that has D D in the title, or the working title. Thought it looked like Mary Carlisle but can’t find a connection. Thoughts? Guesses?

I start teaching another class on Pre-Code films today, so here's one of the more Pre-Code-ier musical numbers of the Pre-Code era. From Meet the Baron (1933), directed by Walter Lang. 1/2

“Miss Brooks isn’t like anybody...she has a very definite personality. She doesn’t do much, perhaps because there isn’t much to do but probably because she hits hardest when doing nothing...but nobody looks away when she’s on screen.” — A critic on It’s the Old Army Game (1926)

Louise sports an interesting hat in a photo for King of Gamblers (1937). Director Robert Florey promised Louise a minor role but all of her scenes were deleted. She remained bitter at what she thought was Paramount humiliating her as revenge for her being “difficult.” (Thread)

It's a photomontage made by fervently anti-Nazi German Dadaist artist John Heartfield. He used the signature Ro. H. Po. (short for Rot-Heiß-Post) on photocollages he published in Communist magazines. He designed sets for Brecht, the cover of Upton Sinclair's The Millennium and escaped the SS twice.
