I will be presenting and attempting to tie two threads together. 1. My current research on small, rural Black communities, landscapes (of charcoal!) and the Underground RR in SE PA. 2. Recent work with indigenous communities of PA re those same landscapes. Nope, I'm not nervous at all.

A new Handbook of Evolutionary Psychology has just been published, in which it is claimed that the human species is polytypic: not only is race biologically meaningful but the races are distinct enough to be considered subspecies. Published by Elgar. In 2026.
Chapters in Part III take stock of the current state of evolutionary psychology, by casting wider attention to other social and behavioral sciences and assessing the field's influence on them. In Chapter 11 ('Evolutionary psychology and anthropology'), Heiner Rindermann identifies three major forces that oppose scientific anthropology: Religion, National Socialism ('Nazism'), and woke leftist ideology. Ironically, in this sense, woke left ideologues, who include most anthropologists themselves, geneticists, and other university academics, share much in common with the Nazis in their common opposition to scientific anthropology.
Rindermann's extensive review of the literature leaves no doubt that humans are genetically polytypic and contain different biological races or 'subspecies' At the end of the chapter, Rindermann delivers devastating rebuttals to all potential arguments against the notion of races/subspecies among humans.

I've written to the govt about a concern causing real frustration across North Herefordshire: the practice of "farmwashing," where supermarkets use misleading marketing to suggest produce comes from British family farms - when it has actually come from overseas.
Dear Angela,

I am writing about a growing concern in North Herefordshire that is causing real frustration among farmers and consumers alike: the practice widely referred to as “farmwashing”, whereby supermarkets utilise misleading marketing tactics to suggest produce has been sourced from British family farms - when it has actually come from overseas.

This issue has particular resonance in my constituency. North Herefordshire is home to many family farms, and local residents care strongly about supporting British food and farming. Yet there is increasing concern that this public support for British farmers is being manipulated and misused by major supermarkets who engage in “farmwashing” tactics, profiting from imagery and marketing that creates a false impression of where food comes from. These practices not only undermine the ability of consumers to make informed choices and support British producers, but also place yet more strain on small family farmers at a time when many are already struggling to cope with the devastating impacts of climate breakdown-induced extreme weather events, and with rising fuel and fertiliser costs due to the illegal war on Iran.

I would therefore be grateful if you would work with retailers and standards bodies to ensure that food labelling is accurate, clear, and not misleading to consumers - including in relation to country of origin and packaging design. I also ask that you consider whether further guidance or stronger rules are needed to prevent branding practices which create a false impression of British or local origin, and that you meet with me and farmers in North Herefordshire who have been directly affected by farmwashing practices to discuss any further support needed from government to combat this issue.

I would additionally welcome the opportunity to discuss not only food labelling, but the wider pressures on family farms, including the impacts of climate breakdown and the need for greater government support to m…

This was the subject of my undergraduate dissertation (comfortably back in the last century). We built a wee hearth in my pal's back garden and used a set of bellows from an antique shop. The thermocouple failed half way through, but the end of the copper tuyère melted so it was at least 1085°!
Idiot in his youth putting a crucible willed with cassiterite and charcoal into a smelting hearth made from some bricks on top of a roofing slate and a lot of charcoal. There is a pair of bellows in the background. Also some camping chairs and half a bottle of beer. Idiot is helped by a pal, who is leaning in with a pair of tongs. Two other pals and a case of beer are out of shot - it was hot and thirsty work! The bottles of beer were the wee stubby French ones from Morrisons, so we were drinking responsibly. I appear to be wearing a t-shirt of the Bradford punk band Health Hazard, who were a firm favourite of mine.

I remember nipping to the garage to buy more charcoal on my motorbike, but when we had finished I had drunk too much beer to ride safely/legally and got the bus home. The house and bellows owner, Rog, was an ex-biker and had a fettle with my bike the next day when he got up (he's that sort of person). I don't know what he did, but I never managed to get it to run as well as its post-Rog fettling phase.
