Dear academics, can we abolish conferences and invest in smaller, regional colloquiums and workshops? We can use all the money saved to invest in so many critical causes/orgs related to our collective scholarship. I think we can act with more direct action and urgency.

"Benches are where optimistic visions of civic life meet reality. To remove them, or to curate who gets to sit, is to abandon the work of defining a civic ideal and determining, together, how to live up to it." NEW: Why benches are slowly disappearing from public spaces — and why we need them back:

The Disappearance of the Public Bench
Benches are microcosms of an expansive debate about who belongs in urban public spaces. When they are removed or made uninviting, we lose more than just a place to rest.

I have followed @attackerman.bsky.social's hard-hitting War on Terror journalism for almost 2 decades. But the tenderness of this piece of reporting on Gaza's hospitals is both beautiful and heart-breaking.
But Gaza is more than a crime scene. “Obviously, much of it is destroyed, but Gaza City is beautiful, the people are beautiful,” Thorburn says. At Al-Ahli, she lived with 10 young women in their twenties. They were nurses, radiology technicians, medical students, lab techs. They took Thorburn to the beach to watch people fish—a dangerous activity with the Israeli navy offshore—enjoy a picnic with what food they had, and otherwise do “their very best to live a normal life.” Resisting the attempts to rip them apart, they weaved themselves together, each reinforcing the others, like gauze.
