Shell midden on the Patagonian Atlantic coast. Food has always been important to us, but not just as something to eat. Shell middens, made from seafood waste, have also served as community landmarks and burial places. 🆓 doi.org/10.15184/aqy... 📷 Mikelzubi / CC BY-SA 4.0 🏺 #Archaeology

The loveliest local-to-me field botanist took me on a walk this weekend and I spent all this morning prepping new reference material for the freezer.

Okay, but what is the best bird and why is it (totally objectively) a crow?

Today’s teaching is an artefact workshop and I got to bring these beautiful copies of upper Palaeolithic art as a treat. Bonus: also brought my own.
Cardboard boxes with reconstructions of Upper Palaeolithic artefacts, including a spear thrower and a bunch of Venus figurines. Happy archaeologist with a silver (Willendorf) Venus pendant on her necklace.

Yesterday was ‘bring your husband to work day’ for me 😂 Feels like I’m famous when he’s just randomly snapping pictures. Good date activity though; first make them listen to your niche lectures and then eat a delicious lunch without doing the dishes.

Why did Palaeolithic artists decide to produce art on the same walls that someone else had decorated? Do rock art palimpsests reflect dialogues that occurred across tens-of-thousands of years? My new OA paper develops a conceptual framework to explore these dimensions! 👇🏺 doi.org/10.1007/s108...

Kiel presentation over and done with! ❤️🌱 What an enjoyable session today, with lots of perspective on submerged landscapes. I call these pictures: 1) plant nerd gesticulates wildly and 2) is academia wildly biased against short people 😂
Archaeobotanist in blue dress with fish skeletons gesticulates wildly while trying to convince other people of the value of studying plants in a conference room. The slide in the background says “Seeds of collaboration. The archaeobotanical potential of submerged sites”. Head of archaeobotanist JUST reaches over the speaker podium in lecture hall.

Catkins are all well and good but is there honestly anything cuter than a female hazel (Corylus sp.) flower? For the non-plant nerds it’s the tiny pink thing on one of the green buds in this pic!
A picture of a hazel shrub in front of a brick wall. The shrub has no leaves yet, but has just started flowering. In the background you can see male catkins and in focus is a tiny green bud with a hot pink female flower on the tip.
