There are 1000 reasons to hate generative AI, but the one that goes undetected is the complete and total destruction of humanity's core epistemological understanding of the world. Everything else is downstream of that, and the consequences are only going to get more horrifying if this isn't stopped.

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

I work with abortion providers in Colorado. One of them had a patient whose water broke at 4 1/2 months, was told by a Houston hospital they couldn't help her until she went into labor or went septic, so *she got on a plane & flew to Denver mid-miscarriage*. There's no respectful disagreement here.

Years ago I interviewed Houston Mayor Annise Parker who told me one of the main reasons the city was able to cut homelessness by so much is she forced all the governments and nonprofits into a room and made them use the same data system. Meanwhile in LA www.latimes.com/california/s...
The agencies use different data systems, and even different Google spreadsheets, to produce their reports and often have different bureaus within them managing different housing programs. For example, a senior director for Bass told the interviewers that the Inside Safe program uses an internal Google spreadsheet to manage its occupancy records and does not have access to the Homeless Management Information System, the countywide database that tracks street contacts with homeless people and housing placements

I am so tired of Jonestown being a stock reference for “haha, you’re in a cult.” 918 people died, most against their will, and still it has become shorthand for how stupid you think someone is. It's the McDonald's hot coffee incident of mass death — universally referenced, entirely misremembered.

Cornell police omitted Jane Doe's claim that she was raped from their summary of her statement submitted to the DA. The DA closed the case without requesting the transcripts. It was either malpractice or it was intentional, and it tainted the investigation. They failed her.
