Congratulations! Dr Michelle Rönspies from @kit.edu will receive this year’s Eduard Strasburger Prize. She has demonstrated for the first time that the gene scissors CRISPR/Cas can be used to restructure even large fragments of plants’ genomes without impairing growth or development.
The graph illustrates how Dr Rönspies reduced the number of chromosomes by fusing chromosome number three to chromosome number one, schematically visualized with the haploid chromosome set.

Congratulations! Dr Paul Grünhofer from @unibonn.bsky.social will receive one of this year’s Horst Wiehe Prizes from DBG’s own Horst Wiehe-Stiftung for his excellent #PlantSci PhD thesis. He had questioned long-standing assumptions about the protecting surfaces of poplars.
The inner and outer protecting surfaces of poplars were studied by Dr Paul Grünhofer in different developmental stages of the trees in climate chambers and greenhouses.
