Here's a chart showing who funds basic research in the US. It's easy to tell that private funding cannot make up for significant cuts to government funding.
A 3D-styled pie chart illustrating the distribution of Research and Development (R&D) resources based on the NSF NCSES National Patterns of R&D Resources: 2022-23 Update.

The chart is divided into six segments, listed here in descending order of their financial contribution:

Federal Govt: The largest segment, shown in dark blue, accounts for 51% of the total, valued at $39.5 B.

Higher Ed. – Institutional: A light coral segment accounting for 23%, valued at $18.2 B.

Non-profit at Research Institutes: A dark red segment accounting for 8%, valued at $6.1 B.

Higher Ed. – Direct Philanthropy: A bright red segment accounting for 7%, valued at $5.8 B.

Business: A grey segment accounting for 7%, valued at $5.2 B.

Non-Federal Govt: The smallest segment, shown in light blue, accounting for 4%, valued at $3.2 B.

This is straight from the authoritarian playbook. Cut services that strengthen democracy then promote one’s “largesse.” The “gift” from the boss implies only he can solve the problem (that he purposefully created in the first place).

You can’t write about every other country’s far right party like this, & then continue to not call the Republican Party a far right party & write about them as if they’re the 🇩🇪 Christian Democrats or 🇬🇧 Tories. It’s both factually wrong & bad journalism. And yet, it keeps happening every day.

Ukraine is targeting Russian refineries; the Houthis are blowing up pipelines… Maybe the good thing about both the Iran and Ukraine wars is that they will hasten the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable (localized) energy solutions.

Because it’s all about the cult of personality and the power of the individual. It’s a betrayal of democratic values and an act of desperation. The Arc du Triomphe, btw, does not honor Napoleon; it pays tribute to those who fought and died in the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. 3/3

Also, to be clear, this is not technically a “triumphal arch” and should not be referred to as one, especially in the media. A triumphal arch is built to honor *someone else* — a great general, say, or an army — after a meaningful military victory. What Trump wants to build, instead, is… 1/3
