The smol people and I finished Sir Terry Pratchett’s novel Hogfather night before last. Since I don’t have the next book in the Death series we started Good Omens. I think we may well end up reading the entire Discworld 41 book series. G.O. Is a stand-alone novel. So we are 9.1 out of 42 read. ✔️

I recommend no less than 4 copies of any beloved book. A paperback for margin notes and lending to friends, an eBook for reading with greasy snack fingers, an audio book so you know how character names are pronounced, and a pristine hardcover to be buried with you like a pharaoh.

I haven’t been watching the Flynn trial and I should have been because WHAT DO YOU MEAN he wrote love song power ballads to his mistress? And they PLAYED THEM in court? Holy hells bells. Yall, I do not have the ability to hold my face in a neutral position for that kind of courtroom evidence.

It's not a very popular option at the middle school age because you have to carry your bag all day (no lockers). There's also just the issue of whether it would actually save us money when you account for their different tastes in what they will or will not eat. We may go there eventually.

Last year my kids' school lunches were covered by a grant to their elementary school. This year their lunches are not covered at their middle school. Lunch is $4.50 a meal. For the two of them, that's $45 a week, or about $180 a month. That is not insignificant, even for a middle class family. Sigh.

If you were unaware of this war and it's high death toll, it's not really your fault. This is the result of media programming. This war isn't important to CNN, MSNOW or other media companies, so you don't hear about it. Just like national parks are less important than the Kennedy Center to them.

About 70,000 people have died as a result of war in Gaza, we hear about it all the time. Since 2023, almost the same amount of people have died from war in Sudan. We never hear about it. I doubt most people could even point to Sudan on a map.

For folks wanting to expand on the Macklemore/Ed Sheeran situation, I recommend the 1957 Albert Camus lecture "Create Dangerously," which u can find in this book. In it, he talks about the line good art must walk between frivolity & propaganda, & how art that insists on being a luxury becomes a lie.
My hand holding a paperback copy of the Albert Camus book of essays called "resistance, rebellion, and death", with a black and white blocky cover. Behind the book are a blue rug, my son's hot wheels, and a bookshelf.

Art is political and the political is personal. Rage Against the Machine is political? REM? Tupac? Surely not Springsteen? Ani, Tori, Buffalo Springfield, NWA. The list goes on and on. Art is political and Wu Tang is for the children!

Black text on white page that reads:

Whether you call it New York City, Nueva Yol, or PueblaYork, Hispanic and Latino New Yorkers are at the heart of the city we love.

From the labor activism of Luisa Moreno, to the marches of the Young Lords in the South Bronx in 1969.

From Juan Rodriguez, a free, mixed-race Dominican sailor who became the first non-indigenous resident of Manhattan in 1613, to Jose Alvarado, NYCHA's very own Knicks Champion.

From the Nuyorican Poets Café on the Lower East Side, to Toñita's in Williamsburg, New York City would not be New York City without its Hispanic Heritage.

And yet, more than three-quarters of Latino New Yorkers struggle to afford living in New York City. As we mark Hispanic Heritage Month, we remember that Hispanic and Latino families must be at the heart of our affordability agenda.

No New Yorker should lose their life just trying to get around our city. We refuse to accept preventable tragedy as an inevitable part of living in New York.  That's why we’ve announced more than 100 policies to make our streets safer over the next 10 years.

underrated part of El-Sayed’s messaging strategy seems to be shaming journalists who ask dumb questions that play into right-wing frames. you can’t answer these in a way that satisfies them, but you can make it embarrassing enough that you impose a toll on asking.
Abdul El-Sayed: "Weijia, with all due respect, this is the third time you've asked about a Twitch streamer ... their whole game is to make us fight culture wars so that we don't pay attention to the fact the president has made $2.2 billion ... "

You know, when you find out that the art you like is made by people you've learned hold views you find wholly repugnant, I don't think you need to disavow ever having enjoyed the art. It's okay to acknowledge you liked or loved that art, but are now putting it aside. That was then, this is now.

Today, I was proud to join New Yorkers for the 9/11 Day of Service at the Intrepid Museum. September 11th is a day we remember the terror and loss our city endured. It is also a day we remember the extraordinary courage, kindness and generosity New Yorkers showed one another.
Mayor Mamdani volunteers at the Intrepid day of service. He is wearing a suit and a blue hair net.

Black text on white page that reads:

In 1882, 10,000 workers marched up Broadway in the first-ever Labor Day parade. Led by democratic socialists and organized by New York’s unions, they rallied the movement that went on to win us weekends, safety standards, overtime pay, a minimum wage, and social security.

None of those victories were guaranteed. And none are permanent.

We created the first-in-the-nation Office of Worker Power to put the full weight of City Hall behind the people who keep New York running. On Labor Day, we honor the workers who came before us by fighting for the workers who come next.

Happy Labor Day, New York. The future of worker power is ours to build. Learn more at nyc.gov/workerpower.

Thousands of New Yorkers woke yesterday to devastating news from home. Flooding along the Nepal-Tibet border has taken hundreds of lives, and the search for those still missing continues.

To our Nepali and Tibetan neighbors:
this city knows what it means to grieve a place you left and still call home. You are not carrying this alone. New York City stands with you.

I actually don’t believe in overconsumption when it comes to books. In an age where they are literally destroying books I think it’s so important to have physical media. Buy all the books. Build your library up. Buying books will never be a bad decision.
