One thing I’ve learned from both countries I’ve lived in is that what people can see very clearly abroad they have difficulty admitting about their own countries - ppl can call something racist or fascist in the US or elsewhere in Europe and call the self same thing ‘complicated’ on their doorstep

That shame is the same thing that prevents many white Germans from warning non-white people in Germany to take action to protect themselves. It is a subtle thing - it manifests as "surely it's not that bad", "they're just a few bad apples, they're just idiots", etc. But it causes crucial delay.
