European Commission officials arguing that a customs union is the best way for the UK to avoid 'Made in Europe' barriers. But the issue seems to be Chinese investment in UK plants, not rerouted Chinese imports. www.ft.com/content/5453...

Competitiveness, sovereignty, innovation. I reckon we'll hear these words just a few times during Thursday's SOTEU. But how does Europe achieve them? Public equity markets can play an important role - funding European bets on new technologies and scale. Yet Europe is falling behind. 1/8 🧵

Services has also taken a hit with exports to the EU being 7% lower and imports 19% down. The worst affected sectors were travel (down 39%), transport (down 21%) & financial services (down 24%). What do you think has driven these changes & what could reverse the trend? #TradeFactOfTheMonth #Brexit

It's been a busy Brexit week, but one issue has received much less coverage than I'd expected: how Brexit has changed Northern Ireland, and what it means for the debate about Irish reunification. Join us next week for a great event with @otoolematthew.bsky.social and @adampayne26.bsky.social.

And in my own essay, I reflect on what the past decade has taught us and what comes next. Britain's European question remains far from resolved a decade after the referendum. The old arguments may have faded, but the task of defining the UK's place in Europe has not. www.cer.eu/publications...

In a forward-looking piece, @cergrant.bsky.social looks beyond the immediate 'reset' in UK-EU relations. Can be more than a modest exercise in repair? He offers a well-informed perspective on how the relationship might evolve in the coming years and over the longer term. www.cer.eu/publications...

But how to move closer? Catherine Day, former EU Commission secretary-general, argues that if Britain wants closer ties, the EU will expect corresponding obligations. It will not weaken the logic of membership for the benefit of a country that chose to leave. www.cer.eu/publications...

@nathalietocci.bsky.social asks if the current reset may have reached its limits – not because it rests on wrong instincts, but because the UK-EU relationship lacks a clear political destination. www.cer.eu/publications...

@johnspringford.bsky.social and I look at the costs of Brexit. Brexit may not have ruined the UK economy, but it has lowered its growth path and reduced trade. Our own estimates show how most of the damage comes from leaving the single market than the customs union. www.cer.eu/publications...

Striking fact about the Makerfield election: left-right divide has barely budged in the last three GEs (7 years). Lab+LD+Green have gained 53-56 per cent of the votes each time; Con+Ref+Restore 43-47. All the action has been voter movements within each tribe. (Table from @peterkellner.bsky.social)

New research out today with @johnspringford.bsky.social. Ten years after the referendum, we estimated the costs of Brexit to UK trade – and identified how much of the damage comes from leaving the single market versus the customs union. Not an easy exercise, but we’ve had some striking results 👇

I’m surprised to see this from YouGov. It’s a perfect example of how not to ask a polling question. “Clean energy” can be – and in most instances is – “cheaper energy”.

This, to me, suggests that the EU's strategy of "diversification by FTAs" falls short. Europe's biggest problem isn't only competition from Chinese imports in the EU market and supplier dependence, but also intense competition in third markets, esp in high-value segments where China now dominates.

An important paper laying out the scale of China's challenge to Germany's – and Europe's – export-led economic model. We should debate how best to respond, but it's a mistake to think we can return to the world of yesterday. Doing nothing is also a policy choice.

Ten years too late, some commentators are realising the Brexit referendum wasn’t really about Europe, but about the dissatisfaction of a large swathe of voters with the state of the country and “the system”. Who knew. The costliest populist experiment of our times. www.thetimes.com/comment/colu...

Like all of the best soldiers, she seems well aware of the twin battles she’s waging. But my God, the impact this war will have had on the whole generation of Ukrainians is truly beyond our present comprehension. And we’re still debating whether Ukraine “deserves” to be part of the EU — pathetic.

What a devastating piece in this weekend’s FT — a profile of a remarkable 25-years-old Ukrainian woman, Yana Zalevska, who is the commander of an all-women drone unit. And who is also waging a war on another front — in her own mind.

I don’t think he’s correct: the 2016 Industrial Strategy focused squarely on the UK productivity problem, and these issues were always brought before MPs. Interest in growth policy declined in the subsequent years, and then Johnson’s “levelling up” agenda pulled focus even further away…

The rewriting of history carries on. It was the 2016 Brexit referendum that has crowded out more important issues from British political life. The single biggest cost of Brexit is its opportunity cost: all the things that could’ve happened between 2016-24. But sure, let’s talk about “SW1 pathology”.
