Competitiveness, sovereignty, innovation. I reckon we'll hear these words just a few times during Thursday's SOTEU. But how does Europe achieve them? Public equity markets can play an important role - funding European bets on new technologies and scale. Yet Europe is falling behind. 1/8 🧵

In Brussels and beyond, tech sovereignty is all the rage. And to be fair, the US’ recent export controls on Anthropic’s top AI model and simmering EU-China tensions make the risks of Europe relying on foreign tech more tangible. So what should we make of the EU’s approach? 🧵1/9

Combined with the €5 billion Scaleup Europe fund, this represents real progress toward mobilizing funding for European tech. It will take time for these investments to bear fruit, though. Now let’s implement, and move forward on EU Inc, the CMU, and deepening the single market.

This is a big deal for the upcoming US midterm elections. Following yesterday’s vote in Virginia, it’s likely Democrats will pick up 4 House seats in the state this Nov. This will help counteract GOP gains elsewhere & means Dems just got one step closer to retaking the House of Representatives.
