Got myself a new earring. What do we think, chat?
Photo of your humble narrator, side on so as to display said bit of bling. I am a white bloke, early 50s, short grey beard and mid length grey hair with blue framed glasses and a blue baseball cap worn backwards - mainly as a way of keeping my hair off my face. The earring is in my left ear. It is a small gold hoop inlaid with green ceramic that sits close to the lobe. I was keen to avoid going too Johnny Depp/piratical with it, while still adding, you know, a little something.

This festbier from Thornbridge is very tasty. Lovely robust malt to it, toasty and sweet with a bitter snap of hops to balance it out. (It was a free sample, I should point out.)
A glass of dark golden lager next to a can. The beer’s name is Zehn.

Been getting hands-on with bergamot and rock samphire today with the Isle of Wight Distillery 🍸
Half a bergamot on a wooden tabletop next to a leaf from its tree. Rock samphire growing among the rocks (unsurprisingly) on the southern coast of the island.

Dicking about with a little bit of sci fi horror, 240-word #flash-fiction
Doyle had felt something was off as soon as he entered the building. He stood among the kicked over furniture with his blaster raised and his back to the living room wall, waiting for his breathing to slow. Next to him was a door that should not be there -- that Halloran, in his ear, insisted was not on the schematics.

“Fuck your schematics,” Doyle hissed. “I’m telling you it’s there. How did no one else spot it?”

They were hunting a replicant. A simple enough job, usually, but this one was different, used its powers in a new way. It had already cost two men before him their lives.

“You gotta proceed,” said Halloran.

Doyle bit his lip. Moved carefully through the doorway into a sparse empty room with just an armchair and a footstool.

He stamped hard on the stool, breaking its frame. Blasted the chair and left a smoking hole in it.The stool was just a stool, the chair just a chair.

The only other objects were china tchotchkes on a shelf, gleaming like teeth.

Doyle sighed. “It’s clear. Nothing big enough left.”

Halloran grunted. “They get bigger every time.”

“Last one was seven foot,” said Doyle.

A window on the far wall winked shut. The tchotchkes sprouted, sharper, larger. The floor undulated beneath Doyle’s feet. Darkness closed around him and flooded with pain, pressure that pierced his flesh, ground his bones, smothered his screams.

Supper: rice and lumps. Today the rice is brown and the lumps are “Chinese” chicken. Turned out all right.
A scoop of brown rice. Lumps of battered chicken breast in a sticky “Asian” sauce, topped with sesame seeds and spring onions.

No cheating. Share the last photo of the sky from your camera roll (if you feel like it) For views from north Norfolk, all taken last week.
Lots of little clouds in a blue sky above a yellow sandy beach. They are mostly white and puffy. A few are greyer, flatter, and less substantial. Blue sky with sun and clouds over a shingle beach, with sun shining on the sea. Blue sky with white clouds over a view of the marshes near Blakeney, seen from the water on a creek. Very blue sky with only a distant band of puffy white clouds marching along the horizon. Blue sea. White sailing boat moored at a buoy. Its mast and furled sail point into the sky.

This kind of day today. Lovely, and knackering.

Anish Kapoor at The Hayward Gallery: spotta kulcha innit
A large red sculpture that will STAIN YOUR CLOTHES if you get too close. It occupies almost the entire room. A painting that is mostly red save for a yellow bit in the middle that appears to emanate from a dark slash. A reflective curvy sculpture thing, outside. Sky and concrete abound, and are warped and reflected in interesting ways. Another curvy reflective sculpture outside in the sun, amid the brutalist concrete of the South Bank.

More research
A dry martini in a frosty Nick and Nora glass on a garden table, with blurry foliage in the background. It is garnished with a small basil leaf, because I don’t have any lemon or olives and it’s a fairly herbal gin. It works. Testing the Italian gin I was sent to assess.

CROSS-SECTION PORN
The cut edge of a slice of the tortilla, showing its internal composition: lotsa layers of thinly sliced potato that has been slowly fried in oil. It’s more spud-cake than omelette, really. It was very tasty.

It’s “tore-tiller”, actually.
No of course it’s not. It’s tortilla, as in the Spanish style omelette with spuds in. The one pictured also sports slithers of red pepper and onion.

And this sums up his approach pretty well:
Ultimately, Branson is most interested in showcasing what wood can do – especially species other than oak. "We talk about being a tree company that makes drinks," he says. "It so happens that we started with drinks. We could make chairs. It could be we make incense from the forest, or candles."

Anthony Gladman @anthonygladman.com · 23/06/2026
Enjoyed this little moment of describing Branson's ultrasonic maturation process. (Transcript in alt text.)
"He pops his kegs into a water bath housed within an ultrasound generator. Three of these unassuming-looking steel boxes are about the same size and shape as a microwave oven. A third is closer to a domestic radiator: longer, taller and thinner. The water within these is heated to 80ºC. So far so pleasant. Then the screaming begins."

Earlier this year I visited Ben Branson, who uses weird science to extract flavour from all manner of trees. He shook up the world of non-alcoholic spirits once before with Seedlip. Now he plans to do it again with Sylva. Read more here (PDF) 👉 dhewxdsd0qahx.cloudfront.net/5213588/Beyo...
Ben Branson standing in front of a tree. He is male, white, 40s, wearing glasses and a plaid overshirt and woollen cap. The tree bit matters. He's all about trees at the moment. He does mad shit to extract flavour from them and put it into drinks.Shelves on a wall holding many, many small glass sample bottles in which are various tree bits (root, bark, leaf, wood, and so on) in 40% ABV ethanol to extract their flavours. There are at least 100 bottles in shot and still more out of shot. The book that kicked all of this off: an old leather-bound copy of "Sylva, or A Discourse of Forest-Trees and the Propagation of Timber in His Majesty's Dominions" by the English writer John Evelyn - first published in 1662.Branson's third favourite tree: a huge oak, over 500 years old. The picture was taken in February so its branches are bare. It was struck by lightning at some point, and there is a scorched and twisted tear down one side of its trunk. It looks like a monster that might come to life at any moment to snatch unwary children up into its boughs.
