Halloween is coming. You don’t have to go to a “trunk-or-treat” event in Seattle! You can close your neighborhood street to through-traffic – for free! Trick-or-Streets permits are free and easy to get. Join here: seattle.gov/transportation/trick-or-streets
The ancient two-panel Drake meme. On the top, he's looking away in disgust and holding his hand up. The text next to it says "Truck-or-treat". On the bottom, he looks pleased and is pointing toward text that says "Close your street".

Former Steelers Head Coach Reveals Minecraft City He’s Been Building For 12 Years
Mike Tomlin served as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2007-2025, which is a remarkably long tenure in the NFL. During more than half of that time, Tomlin was secretly working on a massive Minecraft city, and he's now revealing it to the general public. In the first episode of his deep dive into the Minecraft city--and the first video on his YouTube channel--Tomlin shared how the city began, initially with his kids' participation, but as they grew older, it became more and more of a focus for him alone. Much like the Steelers' roster changed every season, Tomlin remained the constant. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_h_pQ1-5iQg As you can see in the video, Mike Tomlin put an enormous amount of effort and time into building this city, not only creating the skyscrapers and nearby neighborhoods, but also sports stadiums. He said in the first episode that he'd go into more detail on these stadiums later, but the city includes a baseball field and a soccer pitch, alongside the obvious football field. His son Mayce also shared that Tomlin would sometimes take his PlayStation, presumably due to a sudden creative spark. https://twitter.com/maycetomlin/status/2105457694148821231 Tomlin has a lot more time to focus on Minecraft since resigning as the Steelers' head coach following the 2025 season. During his tenure, the team famously never had a losing season, which might just change this year with a grandfather at quarterback and a defense that has major issues stopping the run. Pittsburgh native Mike McCarthy is the team's new head coach, and it's unclear if he plays Minecraft.

even though it's 13 years old, "How Asia Works" still hits. China showed that SOEs can absolutely be part of studwell’s 1–2–3 model (land reform, export discipline, and directed finance) so long as firms still face competition + performance pressure. “The state must get out of the way" is dead wrong

I listened to YIMBY Action’s debate on Prop 45 last night. I was struck by how the Yes side advanced absurd, frivolous and obviously wrong interpretation of 45 but also AB 130 with respect to infill, transportation and data centers.

We don't need Prop 45 to build new housing - recent state laws have already streamlined approval of new homes in existing cities and suburbs. Instead, Prop 45 would rubber stamp sprawl in wildfire zones, and make California's insurance crisis worse. Vote No on 45.

Yes, of course they have a choice, but the choice is much more clear-cut if you're selfish. If your choice is "under-resourced school or mostly white and thus quite racist school," and your child will be victimized by the racism, well, not so easy.

Filtering doesn’t take decades, growth in housing production can offer affordability benefits for new buildings within a few short years. Much work to be done. This doesn’t mean we don’t need more reforms or more subsidized housing money. But skeptics of filtering are lazy/lying to you.

Insurance Commissioner is a hard but important job that demands a serious policy person to deal with a very real crisis that affects nearly every Californian. Do not vote for Jane Kim.

Opinion: Jane Kim’s California insurance plan is built on a myth
The candidate for insurance commissioner has campaigned on a platform of smoke and mirrors: big talk, little respect for the facts, and at times outright falsehoods.

The experience of being a spouse of a physician is a realization of the extent to which we dramatically over-test and over-certify doctors in this country. What a racket.

Prop 45 is designed to benefit sprawl, freeways, and dams (and likely data centers, too). The CEQA infill exemptions from last year already cover the type of housing that we need more of in California.

The California Environmental Quality Act is bad for the environment because it gives litigious busybodies the power to delay and block environmentally friendly projects like bike lanes on the grounds that the government has not sufficiently analyzed the bike lanes’ “environmental impacts.”
sfchronicle.com
A Berkeley bike lane would eliminate 145 parking spaces. Residents are suing to stop it.
Plaintiffs argue that Berkeley City Council approved the Hopkins Street bike lane project without conducing necessary environmental reviews.

after some lovely friends with a timeshare (points-based) took us to Hawaii to stay at a 2bd condo, I found this website called Redweek that is like VRBO for timeshare owners. You can “rent” people’s timeshare week and the prices are quite good. Eg, 2bd Marriott villa on Maui for $600/night at Xmas.
