Yes, do grow asters and other fall bloomers by the north shore of the lake if you want to see monarchs gathering in advance of crossing over Lake Ontario on their big migration to Mexico. You’ll be greeted with this sort of treat when the weather is good.

I think the Black-billed Magpies have gotten sick of hearing me gush over how gorgeous the Common Grackles are. This Junior Magpie flew in and posed on this branch as if to say “check this iridescence out”🤣 #Birds 🪶

I did get out on Sat, but only for a few short hours. Saw a doe and fawn at the pond (in the city). Mama was eating water lilies and the fawn was doing zoomies every few minutes with rests in between. It was like taking your kid to the park I think. #WhitetailedDeer

A mated pair of Sandhill Cranes is walking about their urban habitat at a local pond. No offspring this year, but they seem to be doing well.

A very large Sandhill Crane male is strutting his stuff around his habitat.

A female Sandhill Crane is being harassed by a female red-winged blackbird. These two species have a real love-hate relationship. The red-winged blackbirds chase, peck at, and land on the cranes during nesting season letting the cranes know they don't want them around their nest or young ones. However, during migration, I have witnessed red-winged blackbirds migrating WITH the sandhills in flocks seeming to enjoy each others company.

This is Comet Leonard during its approach to the Sun, imaged by Gerald Rhemann on Christmas Day 2021. The comet had been discovered earlier that year, and broke apart in 2022. This photo won the overall prize for Rhemann of the Royal Observatory Greenwich's Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2022.

A bright point of light at the top of the image is the comet's nucleus; the comet's gas and dust tails trail from the nucleus to the bottom of the image. Complex structures in the dust tail result from outbursts from the nucleus as it undergoes solar heating.

From today’s hike. And with that, good night. ~•~ Fruited Balloonpod Milkvetch (Astragalus whitneyi) with lupine, daggerpod, mariposa lily and paintbrush on a high elevation ridgeline. 🌿

A type of milkvetch wildflower that has gone to fruit. The fruit are semi-transparent pods with red tiger stripes. There are many other wildflowers on the ridge.

Redhead ducks dive under the water to feed, and like other diving birds, they need a run before they get airborne. This female Redhead had just landed in the marsh and, you guessed it, the horned grebe enforcer had issues! She is running at top speed here as she gets ready to lift off! #Birds 🪶

Three Noisy Miner fledglings are hiding in the branches of a flowering Jacaranda tree. The Jacaranda is iconic in Brisbane and much of sub-tropical Queensland and northern New South Wales. It's a large tree and its masses of purple blooms become a prominent part of the scenery. It was once known by university students as "The Purple Peril" as it's blooming in October signalled the nearness of the end of year exams.

Spot the heron!

A large bush of purple and magenta hydrangeas gather around a tree stump twisting upwards, we presume. The heron observes all of this from a dark spot in the right corner. Only its neck and head are visible, but a heron is mostly neck anyway amirite.
