The word "attorney" is Norman; the word "lawyer" is Anglo-Saxon. There were courts of law and equity and ALL OF IT WAS A FUCKING MESS. Everyone who inherited this tradition--whether it be England, Canada, Australia, the US, or any other poor fools--has sorted it out in slightly different ways.

on October 14, a black bear entered the Mammoth Lakes Library at 6 am. it was the 100th anniversary of the publication of Winnie-the-Pooh. the bear went directly to the employees' food supplies. i know what you're thinking. the answer is yes. he ate a pot of honey. this was a pilgrimage.

385K views · 119 reactions | On the very day the world marks 100 years since A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh was first published, a black bear made its way inside the Mammoth Lakes Library branch of the Mono County Free Libraries before opening hours — and, in a tribute no one asked for, went straight for the honey. Director of Libraries, Josef Bopp, shared that the bear entered the library at approximately 6:10 a.m, well before public opening at 10:00am. Upon entering, the bear went straight for the staff snack supply, where it helped itself to peanut butter, a selection of peach cups, a pawful of cookies and — of course — one jar of honey. Satiated, the bear then took a full tour of the library, perusing the new releases and inspecting the reference desk before, evidently content with its visit, letting itself out and departing for the day. Remarkably, no damage was reported. No shelves were toppled and no books were harmed, though the honey jar has not been returned at time of publication. “While we love an enthusiastic patron, and we understand the excitement of the centennial,” said Bopp, “we do remind patrons- and perhaps more importantly our bears- that snacks are not part of the circulating collection.” Winnie-the-Pooh was first published on October 14, 1926, introducing readers to a “Bear of Very Little Brain” with a very large appetite for honey. One hundred years later, the timing of the curious bears visit seems more than a coincidence. The library invites the community (human members only) to celebrate the centennial by visiting any of the seven #library of the #monocounty Free Libraries for a copy of Winnie-the-Pooh, or related bear titles! *On A Serious Note* Pooh may be cuddly, but #mammothlakes bears are wild. Residents and visitors are reminded to: • Keep a safe distance and never approach or feed a bear • Use bear-resistant trash containers and keep car doors and windows closed • Report bear encounters to Mammoth Lakes Police 760-932-7549, option 7. Or 911 in an emergency. As Pooh himself might say, it’s best to think, think, think before getting t | Mono County Free Libraries

This is a great thread. Btw I'm *constantly* having to tell non-authors that book tours are Not A Thing for most authors (if they are, the author either hires PR/teams OR does it all themselves). Anyway, this is good on the current realities, which can be tough (but I do really like what I do also)

When I was a very new pro, I did a signing with Theodore Sturgeon and a couple of other people. I was complaining to him about the trouble I was having with a scene. He looked at me and said, in his resonant tenor, "I give you permission to do it wrong." Most liberating thing I ever heard.

My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet
Kai Shaikh, a Ph.D. student in mathematics at the University of Toronto, also currently at SLMath, observed that theorems are easy to use as benchmarks, but that they capture little of the wonderment at the heart of math. "Just like a photograph of a mile marker can't provide much of the value of actually going on a hike," he said,
"it would seem to me that proofs without stories, or even stories without struggle or mystery, and first glimpses of strange beasts, are not very meaningful or valuable to us humans."

The Phantom Tollbooth Quotes @phantomtollbot.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Where the tollbooth had been just the night before, there was now nothing at all. He searched frantically throughout the apartment, but it had vanished just as mysteriously as it had come—and in its place was another bright-blue envelope, which was addressed simply: "FOR MILO, WHO NOW KNOWS THE WAY"
Dear Milo,
You have now completed your trip, courtesy of the Phantom Tollbooth. We trust that everything has been satisfactory, and hope you understand why we had to come and collect it. You see, there are so many other boys and girls waiting to use it, too.
It's true that there are many lands you've still to visit (some of which are not even on the map) and wonderful things to see (that no one has yet imagined), but we're quite sure that if you really want to, you'll find a way to reach them all by yourself.
Yours truly,

Human beings process information through narrative, through story. We think in stories, remember in stories, plan for the future in stories, worry in stories, dream in stories and connect with one another through stories. When we read to children we embody our deeply human birthright as storytellers

My favourite Annie Dillard quote, from THE WRITING LIFE
Who will teach me to write? a reader wanted to know.

The page, the page, that eternal blankness, the blankness of eternity which you cover slowly, affirming time’s scrawl as a right and your daring as necessity; the page, which you cover woodenly, ruining it, but asserting your freedom and power to act, acknowledging that you ruin everything you touch but touching it nevertheless, because acting is better than being here in mere opacity; the page, which you cover slowly with the crabbed thread of your gut; the page in the purity of its possibilities; the page of your death, against which you pit such flawed excellences as you can muster with all your life’s strength: that page will teach you to write.

This by Courtney Maum is where I am too. I am grateful to her for the words...
For me, the subject of AI detection is an ouroboros. I’ll speak only for myself, here is my opinion. I didn’t ask for artificial intelligence. It’s not something I need, it is not something I desire. And yet, it barged its way into my life and stole all of my books. All of them. Stole them. Trained off of them. Did not compensate me for this theft. So now, AI can write a book like me, because it stole my own work and learned my breed of humor and satire. So if someone runs an AI text detector on my creative output, it will probably “test positive” why? Because AI is a contaminant that has embedded itself into my work by stealing it and using my own work to perpetuate itself. It will test for itself and find AI there because it AI is a virus that has contaminated the DNA of my current and future writing—a form of intellectual rape. A kind of colonization. A raging plague that some gatekeepers are opening the door for.

If you ask me what I’m currently working on, the answer is nothing book-length. I’m not going to publish a new book in this current landscape. That’s a stance of privilege, I recognize that. And I can’t hold this stance forever, I can hold it as long as I have savings from my last book.

This current literary climate isn’t acceptable. It is not acceptable to have a thing thrust upon us that takes absolutely everything, and then be forced to prove that we are not the thieves.
