This by Courtney Maum is where I am too. I am grateful to her for the words...
For me, the subject of AI detection is an ouroboros. I’ll speak only for myself, here is my opinion. I didn’t ask for artificial intelligence. It’s not something I need, it is not something I desire. And yet, it barged its way into my life and stole all of my books. All of them. Stole them. Trained off of them. Did not compensate me for this theft. So now, AI can write a book like me, because it stole my own work and learned my breed of humor and satire. So if someone runs an AI text detector on my creative output, it will probably “test positive” why? Because AI is a contaminant that has embedded itself into my work by stealing it and using my own work to perpetuate itself. It will test for itself and find AI there because it AI is a virus that has contaminated the DNA of my current and future writing—a form of intellectual rape. A kind of colonization. A raging plague that some gatekeepers are opening the door for.

If you ask me what I’m currently working on, the answer is nothing book-length. I’m not going to publish a new book in this current landscape. That’s a stance of privilege, I recognize that. And I can’t hold this stance forever, I can hold it as long as I have savings from my last book.

This current literary climate isn’t acceptable. It is not acceptable to have a thing thrust upon us that takes absolutely everything, and then be forced to prove that we are not the thieves.

A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift featuring a couple in a very brown and sparce forest. He is kneeling to propose. His clothes are inexplicably shiny and her hair is inexplicably big. She is wearing a massive red dress.

heard it here, folks, you can't copyright sexy boys

The Crave copyright case was open and shut once a judge compared the books. Getting to the “shut” part took four years and $3.4 million in legal fees.

In her March opinion dismissing Lynne Freeman’s copyright infringement lawsuit over Tracy Wolff’s Crave series, Judge Colleen McMahon paused amid 157 pages of legal analysis to inventory the damage: six unpublished drafts, nine sets of notes, and four novels whose print shrank and margins tightened with each successive volume, leaving the court with “upwards of 6,000 pages of romantasy fiction.”

“That was a lot of reading,” McMahon observed—the weary understatement of the only person who’d actually finished the assignment for an involuntary book club that doesn’t even serve wine.

Her conclusion, after all that reading, was no substantial similarity as a matter of law. The overlaps Freeman cited were the stock ingredients of YA romantasy: a teenage heroine discovering supernatural powers in Alaska, a dangerous love interest, demonic forces, and the usual assortment of cursed bloodlines. As McMahon put it, “hot, sexy, dangerous boys—central to virtually all young adult romance novels—cannot be copyrighted.”

Writing "wisdom" I hate: WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW. This is the worst advice ever. It would be better if it was KNOW MORE SO YOU CAN WRITE ABOUT IT. Every good writer I know is constantly researching and getting new information and asking experts. It's a terrible bit of advice!

It’s when a book is basically modern with at least the bare minimum, sometimes more, historical details for the setting. Anachronistic, no real sense that this was a real time or place in history, etc. Bridgerton, for example.

I've been reading Crystal Singer by Anne McCaffery. This is an incredibly cyberpunk book- and it came out two years *before* Neuromancer. #crystalsinger #annemccaffery #cyberpunk
The cover of Crystal Singer by Anne McCaffery. It features a white woman with long dark hair bending backwards while singing. She's wearing sci-fi leather armour in dark brown and knee-length boots. The woman is holding a large, purple-and-black crystal in her left hand, and has a science fiction tool covering her right- like an arm cannon but with a long needle coming out of the end. She's standing in front of a mountain range with jagged crystal peaks. End description.

Another reason to extirpate "A.i." from education. If kids grow up "writing" with "A.i.," they will never develop a voice of their own. It'll just be bots all the way down. What a despicable thing to deprive them of the work and joy of finding out how they actually sound as they think and write.
