A typed-up letter:
Dear beautiful women,
I've started this letter like ten times and deleted it every time because very time I start I cry. So I'm just going to write it.
Your flag matters to me. It matters so much that it's flying at a lesbian household where anyone walking by can see it.
I'm a trans girl so I'm not sure you can relate but I'll try. Most days I'm doing math in my head like which hallway is safer, who I can sit near at lunch whether it's worth saying something or just letting it go. I'm so tired. I don't think people who don't have to do it know how tired it makes you.
I walk past your house almost daily. The first time I saw the flag I slowed down without meaning to. It was just hanging there like it was no big deal but to me it was everything. It felt like the people inside would see me as who I actually am and I wouldn't have to explain or prove anything. My shoulders dropped for the first time all day and I almost cried right there in front of your home.
I know that living here isn't easy for gay people like you where not everyone is kind about it so putting that flag up means risking stares, comments or worse. You did it anyway, and that is the bravest thing I've seen anyone do. Every day it stays up it tells people like me that someone is willing to be brave so we don't have to be alone. Now I look for it. Some days it's the one thing that makes me feel like I'm not imagining that I deserve to be here. When so much of the world feels like it's deciding whether there's room for me your flag says there is. Please keep it up. You might not know it but it's helping me get through the day.
Thank you for your courage, and for leaving the porch light on for the rest of us.

My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet
Kai Shaikh, a Ph.D. student in mathematics at the University of Toronto, also currently at SLMath, observed that theorems are easy to use as benchmarks, but that they capture little of the wonderment at the heart of math. "Just like a photograph of a mile marker can't provide much of the value of actually going on a hike," he said,
"it would seem to me that proofs without stories, or even stories without struggle or mystery, and first glimpses of strange beasts, are not very meaningful or valuable to us humans."

SHORT TALK ON ORCHIDS

We live by tunnelling for we are people buried alive. To me, the tunnels you make will seem strangely aimless, uprooted orchids. But the fragrance is undying. A Little Boy has run away from Amherst a few Days ago, writes Emily Dickinson in a letter of 1883, and when asked where he was going replied, Vermont or Asia.

"'Good,' she said, turning over, 'a woman who can fart is not dead.'" Rousseau: the death of Mme de Vercellis
from Rousseau, Confessions, tr Cohen

She had lived as a woman of talents and intelligence; she died like a philosopher. I may say that she made the Catholic religion seem beautiful to me, by the serenity of heart.... She was of a serious nature. Towards the end of her illness she displayed a sort of gaiety too unbroken to be assumed which was mercly a counterpoise to her melancholy condition, the gitt of her reason. She only kept her bed for the last two days, and con- tinued to converse quietly with everyone to the last Finally when s she could no longer talk and was already wind loudly. 'Good,' she said, turning over, in her death agony, she broke a woman who can fart is not dead.'. Those were the last words she spoke.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Legal: Allowable under the law Ethical: Conforming to standards of conduct They are not the same. Societies consider being illegal and being unethical to both be bad. Bad-faith arguers will sometimes say that because something was legal, you are unfair to bring up ethics. Weaksauce.

Outside the Frame

It is enough, now, anywhere,
with everyone you love there to talk to.

And to listen.
Slowly we can tell each other some things about our lives:
runs, rests, brief resolutions; falls, and lulls;
hard joyful runs, in certainty; dull, sweet
durances, human silences;
                                                        look back in at the children,
the regular, neutral flicker of their blood; pale, solemn,
long-legged animal-gods in their sleep,
growing into their lives, in their sleep.
