Anyway, the death penalty should be abolished.

As a practicing Catholic, I pretty strongly believe that Catholic members of the Supreme Court should keep their grubby Catholicism off of our legal analysis*, HOWEVER I would very much love each and every one of them to deeply feel that they have gravely sinned.**

Look, the judicial arm of the state should, under no circumstances, be able to order that someone should be killed. That is not a power the judicial arm of the state should have. However, given that the state has that power in the United States:
A screencap of a tweet from Jay Willis (@jaywillis.net) which reads:

The death penalty is a moral abomination.
State-sanctioned barbarism pushed by incompetent [redacted] and sanctioned by the Supreme Court. Absolute ghoul shit.

There is a link to a news article:

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/ahead-rare-execution-lone-woman-tennessee-death-row-says-peace-rcna600279

Quoting that news article as reading:

The lone woman on Tennessee's death row was still alive after she was administered two lethal injections, her lawyer said in a motion seeking to halt her execution Wednesday night, a stunning development after the Supreme Court had stepped in to allow the state to put her to death.
At 8:26 p.m. local time, witnesses said
"executioners had injected both syringes of lethal injection chemicals and Pike is still alive and snoring," her lawyers said in a federal court filing.
They said Pike "has not lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat," and that curtains to the death chamber "have gone down twice."

"An ambulance was seen arriving at the prison where Pike was to be executed and then leaving. Medical aid was being administered, according to online federal court records." The utter absurdity of the state trying twice to kill someone and then calling an ambulance. We must end the death penalty.

Tennessee inmate still alive after being administered two lethal injections, her lawyer says
Christa Pike, 50, was 18 when she murdered a classmate. She would be the first woman the state has executed in more than 200 years.

The death penalty is not just. The state should not have the power to execute.

One of the things that I talk to my students about a lot is what a referral is. Sure what Kevin is talking about is a completely different context, but some of the same principles apply. First, a referral isn't a name and an address. That's not helpful.

Respectfully to my fellow scholar: That's a common gloss, but a close analysis (cf.: Eco's monographs) it's not that he WILL not lie, it's that he CAN not lie. It's a geas, not unlike that laid upon ancient Celtic heroes. Sir Mix-A-Lot is a "chosen one" in the mode of Arthur or Fionn mac Cumhaill.

“Institutions are often founded on ideals and mythologies that are eventually challenged or repudiated. But like courts and monarchs, institutions can persist through the functions they perform, the interests they serve, and the difficulty of dislodging them once they are entrenched.”

Far be it from me to criticize The Mummy (1999), which is unassailable, however I must humbly submit one of very small question: Wouldn’t it’ve been better to give the background story in dribs and drabs as Evelyn and Rick are explaining it to various people rather than including it as a prologue?

Are we buntingless because the Wild Card round doesn’t merit bunting (which I’d find hard to argue with)? Or are we buntingless because of the lack of home games (which I might argue with)? A mundane Halloran mystery.

There are lots of red lines out there, but one runs solidly through Rahm Emanuel. If you have anything whatsoever to do with encouraging a Rahm Emanuel presidential run then you have, for me, completely lost my attention when it comes to politics and public policy.

There has been no accountability around DOGE as a project or as a theory of governance. For the first, we need a credible Congressional commission. For the second, explaining why DOGE failed feels like a useful exercise for informing what we should do next. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/a-year-on-...

I like it how Ozzie assigns himself little tasks. Earnestly performs them. And then looks to me for praise as if I had asked him to do it. Currently, he is bringing all of his downstairs toys upstairs. He lays a toy close to me and is like, “Did I do good?” And then trots off and grabs another.
