Out now in Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews! When studying language in the brain, we often look for things that can be model systems for language (songbirds, artificial grammars, etc.). Here, we flip this on its head and argue that language itself is an excellent model system for cognition 🗣️🧏‍♀️🧠

Neural dynamics of incremental structure building in spoken language comprehension. This schematic shows how speech is segmented into words, which are incrementally integrated into a hierarchical syntactic structure with an interpretation. The amount of structure built at each word, quantified via incremental node count, is reflected in the dynamics of the network, which lead to a neural signal measurable with magnetoencephalography.
