This is an all-too common pattern. Budget-strapped universities increase enrollment but can't keep up with student support, faculty take on more of the student support role, (without training), students suffer.

I don't know when or why I signed up for NextDoor but I am always tickled that the lost cat alerts include the cat's name. Going to interview local strays to see if any answer to Big Ears, or Persephone, or Tazz.

One summer I had a lab assistant job where I sometimes spent the day catching juvenile turkeys and coloring their heads with red or blue markers to assign them to different drug conditions. I probably messed up that experiment because the first ones I caught (the slow ones) were all colored blue.

Scoop: For nearly a year, NSF has struggled to make new grants. Now we know that it will not catch up. In fact, NSF will award just 6,100 new grants—a 30% y/o/y decline, itself down from a previous avg. of 11,000+. In fact, the last time NSF awarded so few grants was in the early '80s.
