With this ruling, the birthright issue is not going away. The right hasn't really begun *organizing* around getting rid of the citizenship clause. Like Roe, this will be their fight for a generation. An official letter from the Kansas Division of Vehicles dated February 23, 2026, with a redacted recipient address. The letter notifies the recipient that due to the enactment of Senate Bill 244, all Kansas driver's licenses and IDs must reflect the holder's sex at birth. It states that the recipient's current credential will become invalid immediately upon the law's publication on February 26, 2026, with no grace period. The recipient is directed to surrender their current ID to receive a new one matching their sex assigned at birth. The document concludes with instructions on how to appeal the notice if received in error, along with contact information for the department.

Kansas lawmakers bypassed the committee process by doing a whole bill amendment and pushing this in two days. They then overrode the governors veto. They used emergency designation to make it go into effect immediately. There's no grace period. The amount of targeted animus here is staggering.

I can't even begin to describe just how fucked up this law is. People cannot drive to work, to school, or even the DMV to fix this without the threat of being arrested for driving on a suspended license. It literally removes the ability for trans Kansans to participate in society.

Because of the National driver register, since their licenses are suspended, trans folks cannot move to another state and get a new license until they remove the suspension on their existing Kansas license. They can't even escape this by moving to another state.
