In February, the Kansas state legislature passed a law that required all driver’s licenses to reflect sex at birth. Roughly 1,700 intersex and transgender Kansans received a letter saying to get new licenses, including Dakota West. Now, she’s suing. wapo.st/3VaB9yX

Because of our lawsuit, no patient records from NYU or Mt. Sinai have been disclosed to the DOJ as part of these settlements — and that block remains in full effect. It’s beyond shameful that the Trump administration has strong-armed these hospitals into a deal that betrays New York families.

I do think more people should appreciate that Sarah has to be selective about when she draws attention to her identity given the obsessive focus on it by some of her colleagues--she is in a uniquely impossible position. But it also makes it more impactful when she does.
"I was a kid once. I didn't have the courage to come out until I was 21, but it's a fact I have known about myself for my entire life," she said. "I didn't have the courage to come out until I was 21, and that means 21 years of pain, 21 years of unwavering homesickness that only went away when I was able to get the care that I needed. And my biggest regret in life is that I never had a childhood without that pain. I marvel at the courage of transgender young people today who are sharing themselves with their families and this world, despite the toxicity and the hate that too often emanates from the building behind me and from politicians within it."

She concluded, "It is already hard enough to be a kid, and government should not make it harder."

Attorney Barbara Schwabauer explains her decision to leave the Justice Department's Office of Civil Rights rather than comply with a Trump administration order to subpoena the medical records of transgender teens
The Justice Department subpoenaed more than 20 doctors and hospitals that provide gender-related care to minors (including puberty suppressants, hormone therapy and surgeries) accusing them of having “mutilated children in the service of a warped ideology.” Trump had already issued a series of executive orders dismantling protections for trans people, banning them from military service and allowing open discrimination by federal workplaces. The subpoenas demanded patient information protected by privacy law.

Barbara Schwabauer, Civil Rights Division: It’s one thing to say we’re no longer going to stand up for trans people in this administration, we’re not going to file briefs in support of them. But to affirmatively go after them? I could not in good conscience continue to be a part of that. These are teenagers.
