Some thoughts I shared while in the UK, where Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has acknowledged that anti-genocide protestors "were right" but activists are still serving long prison terms for stepping in where their government failed. @astra.bsky.social

Once again, for the politicians, business leaders, and journalists still actively posting on X/Twitter: why? You're using a platform that's owned by someone who's trying to break up your country. The juice isn't worth the squeeze.

The fact that Geoff Meggs just told Gloria Macarenko on CBC that Emily Lowan of the BC Greens appeals to “upper class environmentalists” is a big indication of how worried the NDP are about the Greens. Nothing more. Lowan taking on billionaires doesn't seduce the fancy, Geoff. #bcpoli

brings me no joy to say that Fukuyama nailed it
But supposing that the world has become "filled up," so to speak, with liberal democracies, such that there exist no tyranny and oppression worthy of the name against which to struggle?
Experience suggests that if men cannot struggle on behalf of a just cause because that just cause was victorious in an earlier gen-eration, then they will struggle against the just cause. They will struggle for the sake of struggle. They will struggle, in other words, out of a certain boredom: for they cannot imagine living in a world without struggle. And if the greater part of the world in which they live is characterized by peaceful and prosperous liberal democracy, then they will struggle against that peace and pros-perity, and against democracy.

UBI is a floor. It's a dividend. It's not about replacing jobs. It's about making sure everyone has a non-zero floor to stand on and never fall beneath, and it makes sure that everyone benefits from productivity growth. And it is about enabling everyone to *choose* what they work on, paid or not.

Butterbutt. An older comic.
A four-panel comic titled "yellow-rumped warbler poem". In panel 1, a yellow-rumped warbler stands on a branch in a late autumn scene, and says "Fall is here." In panel 2, the warbler watches a brown leaf fall to the ground, and says "Winter's near." In panel 3, the warbler faces the viewer as brown leaves fall, and says "Need some cheer?" In panel 4, the warbler is showing its luminous yellow rump, and cheerfully says "See my rear."

It's scary that capitalism has gone past mining humans desires for profit. Capitalism, which is a parasite, has realized that we're not efficient enough to sustain it. It's terrifying that our main driving economic system has left us behind. AI and austerity have made this possible.

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, holding a red ball labeled "A SILLY MEME".
The second panel shows Sarah taking the ball and going through a door labeled "GROUP CHAT".
The third panel shows a group of women sitting together and consoling one woman in the center. The woman in the center is saying "...And that's how it happened. It's been the worst day of my life."
The fourth panel shows Sarah standing in the doorway behind them awkwardly holding the red ball.

One of the things that is going to change is that we’re never ever again going to be able to be dominated by public officials who tell us, ‘Trust the experts,’” Mr. Kennedy said during the Tuesday session.

“If somebody tells you, ‘Masks work, trust the experts,’ A.I. may tell you otherwise,” he added. “If somebody tells you, ‘Social distancing works, trust the experts,’ A.I. may correct that. And if somebody tells you that a vaccine will prevent transmission and infection, or you need to take it to protect your grandmother, A.I. may say it actually doesn’t do that.”
