This study is a nail in the coffin for all BECCS-advocates (looking at you, Denmark!): “Assuming that all four planetary boundaries are respected (…) the model study indicates a removal potential [from BECCS] of less than 200 million tonnes of CO2 in 2050.”

The graph below shows the lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions from Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles and EVs. The embodied carbon from battery manufacture is yellow in the graph. You can see that it’s dwarfed by the emission savings from driving EVs compared to ICE vehicles.
Figure ES.1. Life-cycle GHG emissions of average medium-size gasoline internal combustion engine (ICEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) registered in Europe, the United States, China, and India in 2021 and projected to be registered in 2030. The error bars indicate the difference between the development of the electricity mix according to stated policies (the higher values) and what is required to align with the Paris Agreement.

Also, two other things: 1) These temperature targets refer to long term averages, so one year over 1.5°C isn’t reaching that target. 2) 1.5°C is a policy target and not a geophysical target. Nothing magical happens at 1.5°C.

Who's arguing we shouldn't? All I'm saying is that a two-way CfD is a reasonable instrument to get the 3GW going, affording >6 years to manage other risks, including a price collapse. Which we btw can't predict, not least bc of the current market. Genuinely curious, what's your preferred option?

Andreas Stokkendal @andreasstok.bsky.social · 18/12/2024
Not sure I understand the first point. Collapse of electricity prices is a risk, but both marginal (there will be demand-side support) and manageable in any case. If the alternative is no/reduced buildout, I don't see why a two-way CfD is not a decent bargain for both sides.
110
Andreas Stokkendal @andreasstok.bsky.social · 18/12/2024
If a two-way CfD gets the 3GW built today, with the risk of depressing prices in the future, I think that is worth taking. Depressed prices are manageable and may be averted by the improved outlook for demand-side measures following from supply certainty.
110
Andreas Stokkendal @andreasstok.bsky.social · 18/12/2024
Essentially the costs and risks of enabling investments for the tendered 3 GW by targeting demand-side measures: electrification of industry or interconnectors and hydrogen infrastructure to Germany, etc. Unlocking supply/demand requires gov't intervention one way or the other.

Andreas Stokkendal @andreasstok.bsky.social · 17/12/2024
Sure, from a market perspective. Keen to understand if a CfD would be a price worth paying to get projects off the ground today. I.e compare the costs of a CfD in a market with infrequent negative prices compare to other policies to derisk RE investments, and their mitigation contribution over time
200
Andreas Stokkendal @andreasstok.bsky.social · 17/12/2024
Isn’t that contradictory? Investments will increasingly depend on derisking (or a small amount of PPAs) bc the current market is unprofitable?

Andreas Stokkendal @andreasstok.bsky.social · 16/12/2024
What is the projected frequency of negative prices in DK bidding zones? Are these events marginal, and hence negligible in terms of the market/policy risks entailed by either production or financial CfDs?

Cost of electricity relative to fossil fuels is key factor when it comes to industrial electrification. In most EU countries electricity is taxed more & renewable energy support levies are often put on electricity & not on fossil fuels. See our new report👇 www.raponline.org/knowledge-ce...
