If I were running a university where staff spent weeks and weeks of time putting grant proposals together only for UKRI to feed them into LLMs without informed consent—effectively theft of the time and work—I’d be taking serious action to defend those staff. But I’m not running a university, so

The University of Exeter has confirmed that it won’t proceed with compulsory redundancies “at this time”. This means colleagues do not need to complete the pro forma, and there will be no selection process.

Well, national emergency alarm system working well....
Warwickshire fire and rescue service Facebook post that reads "You will have received a national emergency alert about wild fires. This was a request to call 999 IF you spot a wildfire or if there is an emergency. Please do not call 999 to check what's going on. The advice is in the text. Thank you."

Too hot even for Augustus in the BM galleries today. You’d think all that time buried beneath that temple in Sudan would have prepared him for the discomfort of a British summer.

Well, this Odyssey popcorn bucket will make a fun die roller to match w/my Colosseum bucket, if remarkably ill-suited for its intended function. Are the Greeks stacked on top of each other like a cheerleading pyramid? Who Gets To Be The Head? (Obvs Agamemnon wants it, but..) Is Philoctetes the arse?

All my solidarity to colleagues. Another university 'management team' with zero sense of accountability. All too easy to blame the government. And enough with the rhetoric of 'improved curricula'. Impoverished curricula and skills that will not longer be transmitted - that's the reality.

Evidence like this (combined with Rebecca Benefiel & Sarah Levin-Richardson's work) makes me much more skeptical of our assumptions about non-elite Roman women's literacy. There's almost certainly a spectrum of literacy, from Amica and Detfri's ability to sign their names to Sulpicia writing poetry.

"in the street of money in the city of money in the country of money, our great country of money, we (forgive us) lived happily during the war." - Ilya Kaminsky
We Lived Happily during the War

And when they bombed other people's houses, we

protested but not enough, we opposed them but not

enough. I was in my bed, around my bed America

was falling: invisible house by invisible house by invisible house-

I took a chair outside and watched the sun.

In the sixth month of a disastrous reign in the house of money

in the street of money in the city of money in the country of money, our great country of money, we (forgive us)

lived happily during the war.
